WARNING

FOR SAFETY DATA SEE ALSO IN THE SPM TASK 70-11-00-100-501.
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO OBTAIN AND OBSERVE THE MANUFACTURERS MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIALS INFORMATION SUCH AS, HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND CONTROL MEASURES AND ALSO TO TAKE LOCAL REGULATIONS INTO CONSIDERATION.

WARNING

YOU MUST ALWAYS USE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING WHEN YOU USE PAINT STRIPPER. THIS MUST INCLUDE RUBBER GLOVES AND GOGGLES.

WARNING

YOU MUST ALWAYS USE PAINT STRIPPER IN AN AREA WITH SUFFICIENT VENTILATION AND AWAY FROM HEAT OR FLAMES. THIS COULD CAUSE TOXIC MIXTURES.

WARNING

DO NOT DRINK PAINT STRIPPER. KEEP ALL FOOD AND DRINK AWAY FROM PAINT STRIPPER.

WARNING

IF YOU GET PAINT STRIPPER ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES, FLUSH IT IMMEDIATLY AND CONTINUOUSLY WITH LARGE QUANTITIES OF WATER. DO THIS FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES AND THEN GET MEDICAL AID.

CAUTION

IF IT IS NECESSARY FOR A STEEL PART TO BE STRESS RELIEVED OR DE-EMBRITTLEMENT HEAT TREATED; BEFORE AND AFTER CLEANING, IT WILL BE SPECIFIED IN THE ENGINE MANUAL.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-11-29-300-001 Remove the Paint from Aluminum or Corrosion Resistant Steel or Titanium Parts

    2. CAUTION

THIS PROCEDURE MUST NOT BE USED ON LOW ALLOY STEEL OR MAGNESIUM PARTS.
DO NOT LET WATER GET IN THE SOLUTIONS SPECIFIED IN STEP C. A VIOLENT REACTION CAN OCCUR.

Clean the parts. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-14-300-503 or SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503.

    3. Vapor degrease the parts, refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503, if the parts were cleaned by SPM TASK 70-11-14-300-503. Let the parts become cool before you soak them in the paint stripping solution.

    4. NOTE

The solutions are di-phase and have a highly active acidic lower layer and an insoluble seal as a top layer.

Make sure the parts are dry. Then soak them in the lower layer of the silicone epoxy paint stripping solutions: CoMat 01-271 PAINT STRIPPER or CoMat 01-272 PAINT STRIPPER for 30 minutes at room temperature.

    5. After removal from the stripping solution; clean the parts in clean, cold water 59 to 95 deg F (15 to 35 deg C) and then clean with an air/water pressure gun.

      1. To make the parts neutral soak them in one of the solutions that follow: (at a temperature of 59 to 77 deg F (15 to 25 deg C)).

      2. 1 to 2 percent sodium carbonate solution (prepared from CoMat 01-030 SODIUM CARBONATE Na2CO3).

      3. 3.5 percent sodium metasilicate solution (prepared from CoMat 01-044 SODIUM METASILICATE Na2SiO3.5H2O).

    6. NOTE

Do a check with pH paper to make sure the cold and hot water do not contain acid.

Soak the parts in clean, cold water 59 to 95 deg F (15 to 35 deg C). Clean the parts with an air/water pressure gun. Soak the parts in hot water 149 to 203 deg F (65 to 95 deg C), then remove them and dry them with clean, dry compressed air.

    7. Let the parts become cool.

    8. NOTE

Examine the parts each day to make sure the procedure does not cause corrosion.

If necessary do steps 4.C. to 4.F. again.
