Procedure
Pipet a 20 ml sample of the etching solution a 200 ml flask.
Add CoMat 01-201 DISTILLED, DEIONIZED, DEMINERALIZED, OR REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) WATER to fill the flask to the 200 ml mark.
Do the subsequent procedure to make the stock solution for the ferric chloride content analysis and the free hydrochloric acid content analysis.
Stock solution for the ferric chloride content analysis and the free hydrochloric acid content analysis.
Pipet 20 ml of the stock solution into a beaker.
Add approximately 0.5 g of CoMat 01-097 POTASSIUM IODIDE KI to the beaker.
Titrate with a 0.1 N (N/10) solution of CoMat 01-104 SODIUM THIOSULPHATE Na2S2O3.5H2O carefully to a pale straw color.
Add a few ml of starch solution, prepared from CoMat 01-105 STARCH (SOLUBLE), which will give the sample a blue color.
Continue titration with the 0.1 N (N/10) solution of CoMat 01-104 SODIUM THIOSULPHATE Na2S2O3.5H2O until the blue color is gone.
1 ml of 0.1 N (N/10) sodium thiosulfate = 0.00558 g of iron, thus:
(Titration Value) x 8.119 = g/l Ferric Chloride
Calculate the ferric chloride content in the cold ferric chloride etch solution:
(g/l Ferric Chloride) x 0.674 = g/l Combined Hydrochloric Acid
Calculate the combined hydrochloric acid value to use in the calculation of the free hydrochloric acid content in the cold ferric chloride etch solution:
Ferric chloride content analysis.
Pipet 20 ml of the stock solution into a beaker.
Add a few drops of CoMat 01-011 INDICATOR to the beaker.
Mix the sample with a stirrer while you titrate with a 1 N (N) solution of CoMat 01-008 SODIUM HYDROXIDE NaOH (CAUSTIC SODA), SOLID to a permanent pink color.
1 ml of 1 N (N) sodium hydroxide = 0.0365 g of hydrochloric acid, thus:
(Titration Value) x 18.25 = g/l Total Hydrochloric Acid
(g/l Total Hydrochloric Acid) - (g/l Combined Hydrochloric Acid) = g/l Free Hydrochloric Acid
Calculate the free hydrochloric acid content in the cold ferric chloride etch solution:
Free hydrochloric acid content analysis.
