TASK 70-11-61-110-501 The Procedure To Clean an Engine Of Bird Residue
Introduction
This procedure gives instructions for the safe removal of bird residue after a bird strike.
Hygiene
It is important that personnel who remove bird residue follow good hygiene practice at all times.
It is important to have protection for the hands and face before the removal of bird residue or before cleaning surface contamination.
Do not touch your face, nose, mouth, or eyes with gloves that have contamination, and do not eat, drink, or smoke at the cleaning location. If any residue touches your skin, wash it off with disinfectant soap and water. If any residue touches your eyes, flush your eyes with water and get medical aid immediately.
Wash fully any equipment that has touched the bird residues with detergent and an approved disinfectant and/or discard them in a biohazard container. Refer to local regulations for specific instruction.
At the end of the procedure to clean the surface contamination, carefully remove personnel protective equipment and then fully wash your hands and other exposed skin with clean, hot water and a good quality disinfectant soap. Make sure to dry yourself fully.
Personnel Protective Requirements
Protective equipment must be worn by personnel. Wear waterproof coveralls and impervious rubber boots to prevent contamination of work clothes. Wear impervious rubber gloves (thin disposable gloves are not suitable), a face shield and approved mouth mask to prevent contamination of the hands, face, and body. To get the equipment necessary to comply with the local regulations, refer to the local supplier of safety equipment.
Sample Test to Determine the Type of Bird
Samples of bird residue may be required for analysis by IAE. Contact your local IAE representative for instructions.

CAUTION
MANY DISINFECTANTS ARE NOT APPROVED FOR USE ON ENGINE COMPONENTS BECAUSE OF THE RISK OF CORROSION. IN PARTICULAR, DISINFECTANTS THAT CONTAIN ALKALI METALS, INORGANIC HALOGENATED COMPOUNDS, OR MINERAL ACIDS MUST NOT BE USED.
CAUTION
DO NOT CLEAN RESIDUE FROM PARTS, OR YOURSELF, IN A WAY THAT SPREADS RESIDUES ONTO OTHER SURFACES OR INTO THE ENVIRONMENT. DO NOT LET THE CLEANING SOLUTIONS CAUSE CONTAMINATION TO THE ENVIRONMENT. CLEAN THE PARTS THAT HAVE CONTAMINATION IN A CONTROLLED WAY SO AS TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ACCIDENTAL EXPOSURE OF NON-PROTECTED PERSONS. FOR EXAMPLE, USE SPRAY APPLICATORS CORRECTLY TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF AEROSOL TO ADJACENT AREAS.Wear gloves to remove the larger pieces of residue and put the residue in a biohazard bag or container.
Wash fully the surface with contamination and all adjacent surfaces by the procedure specified in the SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-03-300-002. Make sure all residues are fully removed. Fully flush with clean, cold water. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-10-00-100-501 for the permitted level of impurities in the water. Be sure to remove all the detergent from the parts. Do this step again, as necessary, to remove the residue.
Let the surface dry in air or swab dry with clean lint-free wipes (CoMat 02-082 DISPOSABLE WIPING TISSUES) or lint-free cloth (CoMat 02-099 LINT-FREE CLOTH).
Make up the disinfectant. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Use clean water. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-10-00-100-501 for the permitted level of impurities in the water.

CAUTION
THE USE OF HYPOCHLORITE BLEACH IS NOT PERMITTED.NOTE
This step is optional but IAE recommends it as good practice.Wipe the cleaned surface with clean lint-free wipes (CoMat 02-082 DISPOSABLE WIPING TISSUES), or lint-free cloth (CoMat 02-099 LINT-FREE CLOTH) made wet with CoMat 10-136 CALIBRATING FLUID (Disinfectant cleaner aircraft) or CoMat 10-137 DISINFECTANT CLEANERAIRCRAFTsolution. Let the surface stand for 5 minutes and then flush fully with clean cold water. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-10-00-100-501 for the permitted level of impurities in the water.
Let the surface dry in air or swab dry with clean lint-free wipes (CoMat 02-082 DISPOSABLE WIPING TISSUES), or a lint-free cloth (CoMat 02-099 LINT-FREE CLOTH).
