TASK 70-24-00-240-501 Magnetic Particle Inspection - General Information

WARNING
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO OBTAIN AND OBSERVE THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIALS INFORMATION (SUCH AS, HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE HAZARD DATA, EXPLOSION HAZARD DATA, REACTIVITY HAZARD DATA, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, AND USE AND CONTROL MEASURES), AND ALSO TO TAKE LOCAL REGULATIONS INTO CONSIDERATION.Safety Precautions
General
Magnetic particle inspection is a non-destructive procedure to find defects on or near to the surface of ferro-magnetic materials. This procedure can not be used on non-magnetic materials, this includes austenitic steels.
Inspection persons.
All inspection persons must be approved by the local applicable authority.
Inspection procedures.
It is necessary to make two types of magnetic particle inspections for some parts: One to find longitudinal cracks, and the other to find circumferential cracks. The engine manual will give the correct procedure to inspect the part, the amperage necessary, and all other related data.
Surface condition.
For the correct inspection of parts by the use of magnetic particle inspection, surfaces must be clean, this also prevents the contamination of the magnetic particle inspection ink. If a protection coating layer is to be removed (e.g., paint), then do the magnetic particle inspection of the part after removal of the protection coating layer. Magnetic particle inspection will usually be done with protection coating layers on the part unless the Engine Manual tells differently.
