Safety Requirements

WARNING

YOU MUST USE THE NECESSARY CLOTHING TO GIVE YOU PROTECTION. THIS MUST INCLUDE RUBBER GLOVES AND GOGGLES.

IF YOU GET AN AGENT OR A SOLUTION IN YOUR EYES, YOU MUST IMMEDIATELY CLEAN IT AWAY WITH A SUFFICIENT QUANTITY OF WATER FOR A LONG TIME. YOU MUST GET IMMEDIATE MEDICAL AID.

IF YOU GET AN AGENT OR A SOLUTION ON YOUR SKIN, YOU MUST CLEAN IT AWAY WITH A LARGE FLOW OF CLEAN WATER.

YOU MUST GET MEDICAL AID FOR ALL BURNS (THIS INCLUDES SMALL BURNS) AT THE NEAREST SURGERY OR FIRST-AID POST.

THE SURGERY OR FIRST-AID POST MUST BE TOLD WHICH AGENT OR SOLUTION HAS CAUSED THE BURN.

DO NOT ADD LARGE QUANTITIES OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE OR CAUSTIC SODA TO ONE PART OF THE TANK. APPLY THE CHEMICALS EQUALLY ACROSS THE SURFACE OF THE SOLUTION.

THE BLACK OXIDE SOLUTION HEATER MUST ALWAYS BE INSTALLED ON THE SIDE OF THE TANK, ABOVE THE SLUDGE LEVEL.

WHEN WATER IS ADDED TO THE SOLUTION IT MUST BE FULLY MIXED, TO PREVENT A WATER GAS EXPLOSION WHEN THE SOLUTION BOILS.

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO OBTAIN AND OBSERVE THE MANUFACTURERS MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIALS INFORMATION SUCH AS, HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND CONTROL MEASURES AND ALSO TO TAKE LOCAL REGUALATIONS INTO CONSIDERATION.

Procedure

1. SUBTASK 70-33-17-100-001 Make-up and Set-up of the Hydrochloric Acid Pickling Solution

   1. This is an aqueous solution which contains:

      1. CoMat 01-099 HYDROCHLORIC ACID150 to 190g/l.

      2. CoMat 01-102 INHIBITOR ADDITION AGENT 2.5g/l.

   2. The solution make-up is as follows:

      1. Hydrochloric acid SG 1.14, 55 percent v/v.

      2. Water 45 percent v/v.

      3. Inhibitor 0.28 percent v/v.

      4. Always add the hydrochloric acid to the water, while you mix the solution, then add the inhibitor.

      5. The solution can be contained in a polythene tank or glass reinforced plastic tank. If necessary use a heating jacket with the tank. It is necessary to use fume extraction. Use the solution at room temperature, unless the applicable Engine Manual gives different instructions.

2. SUBTASK 70-33-17-100-002 Make-up and Set-up of the Black Oxide Solution

   1. This is an aqueous solution which contains 10lb/gal (1000g/l) of CoMat 01-022 SODIUM HYDROXIDE NaOH (SOLID), 2oz/gal (12g/l) of CoMat 01-252 SODIUM NITRATE NaNO3 and 2oz/gal (12g/l) of CoMat 01-047 POTASSIUM DICHROMATE K2Cr2O7.

   2. Make up the solution as follows:

      1. The solution must be contained in a stainless steel tank with a fume extraction system.

      2. NOTE

         Do not turn on the tank heater until all the chemicals to be added are fully mixed into the solution.

         Fill the tank to approximately 75 percent of its operation level with water.

      3. Add the sodium hydroxide or caustic soda (in quantities of approximately 5 percent of the total to be added), while the solution is continuously mixed.

      4. Let each quantity of added chemical become fully mixed, before more chemicals are added.

      5. Monitor the solution temperature. If the temperature increases to 203 deg F (95 deg C), let the temperature decrease to 140 deg F (60 deg C) before more sodium hydroxide or caustic soda is added.

      6. NOTE

         The fume extraction system must always be used with this solution.

         When all the chemicals are added, fully mix the solution. Then, if necessary, fill the tank to its operation level with water and fully mix the solution again.
