WARNING

THIS PROCEDURE INCLUDES THE USE OF SODIUM CYANIDE. CYANIDE SALTS AND/OR SOLUTIONS ARE VERY POISONOUS AND WORK VERY QUICKLY. THEY GIVE OFF HYDRO-CYANIC GAS, WHEN MIXED WITH ACID, WHICH CAN KILL. THE PRECAUTIONS THAT FOLLOW MUST ALWAYS BE OBEYED.

CYANIDE SALTS AND SOLUTIONS MUST ALWAYS BE KEPT AWAY FROM ACIDS.

THERE MUST BE SUFFICIENT VENTILATION.

YOU MUST NOT LET NICKEL STRIPPING SALTS TOUCH PAPER, WOOD, CLOTH, OR ANY ORGANIC MATERIAL OTHER THAN NEOPRENE.

YOU MUST USE STEEL, STAINLESS STEEL OR NEOPRENE SCOOPS AND CONTAINERS.

WARNING

THE USUAL PRECAUTIONS FOR HOT CYANIDE SOLUTIONS ARE APPLICABLE TO THESE SOLUTIONS.

OPERATORS MUST ALWAYS USE THE APPROVED PROTECTIVE CLOTHING SUPPLIED.

WARNING

FINGER NAILS MUST BE KEPT SHORT AND MUST ALWAYS BE FULLY CLEANED BEFORE YOU EAT, DRINK OR SMOKE.

ITEMS THAT ARE USED TO EAT OR DRINK WITH MUST NOT BE KEPT AT LOCATIONS WHERE CYANIDE IS KEPT OR USED. ALSO, YOU MUST NOT EAT, DRINK OR SMOKE, AT SUCH LOCATIONS.

CYANIDE MUST ALWAYS BE KEPT AT A SAFE LOCATION, WHERE ACCESS IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO APPROVED PERSONS.

CYANIDE SOLUTION PRECAUTIONS:

POISONING WILL OCCUR IF YOU SWALLOW CYANIDE, BREATHE HYDROCYANIC GAS OR IF CYANIDE OR HYDROCYANIC GAS ABSORBS THROUGH YOUR SKIN.

WARNING INDICATIONS OF POISONING ARE DIZZINESS, NAUSEA, GENERAL WEAKNESS AND HEADACHE, PALPITATIONS, FEELING OF SUFFOCATION AND TIGHTNESS IN THROAT, PALLOR, DEEP BREATHING AND UNCONSCIOUSNESS.

A SUPPLY OF CYANIDE ANTIDOTE MUST ALWAYS BE EASILY AVAILABLE.

ALL INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY THE SAFETY OFFICER MUST BE OBEYED.

Procedure

1. SUBTASK 70-33-80-200-001 Test and Control of the Nickel Strip Solutions Used for Nickel Stripping Plasma Coatings

   1. Prepare the test solutions.

      1. Silver Nitrate (0.1M).

         1. Dissolve 16.9890g of CoMat 01-059 SILVER NITRATE AgNO3, previously dried for 1 to 2 hours at 205 to 215 deg F (96 to 102 deg C), in 1000 ml of CoMat 01-201 DISTILLED, DEIONIZED, DEMINERALIZED, OR REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) WATER. Store the solution in a dark container.

         2. Standardize the solution as follows:

            1. Weigh three 0.1 gram samples of CoMat 01-319 SODIUM CHLORIDE (NBS 2201 or equivalnet) which has been dried at 221 deg for two hours and which has an assy of 99.8 percent or better.

            2. Dissolve in 100 ml water.

            3. NOTE

               A 10 percent solution is made up of 1g of CoMat 01-321 POTASSIUM CHROMATE (CHLORIDEFREE) dissolved in 10 ml of CoMat 01-201 DISTILLED, DEIONIZED, DEMINERALIZED, OR REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) WATER distilled or deionized water.

               Add 2 - 3 drops of 10 percent CoMat 01-321 POTASSIUM CHROMATE (CHLORIDEFREE).

            4. Titrate with silve nitrate until the first permanent reddish tint appears.

            5. Record titer.

            6. Calculation:

               M= WP/V5.845.

               Where:

               M = Molarity of silver nitrate solution.

               W = Weight of sodium chloride.

               P = Purity of sodium chloride.

               V = Volume of silver nitrate.

            7. Average the three values obtained.

      2. Potassium Iodide (10%).

         1. Dissolve 100g of CoMat 01-097 POTASSIUM IODIDE KI in 1000 ml of CoMat 01-201 DISTILLED, DEIONIZED, DEMINERALIZED, OR REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) WATER.

         2. Add 1 g of CoMat 01-130 POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE.

         3. Store the solution in a dark container.

   2. NOTE

      For solutions with a high concentration of cyanide, use a 5 ml sample of solution to test.

      Test the nickel strip solutions for free sodium cyanide.

      1. Pipette a 10 ml sample of the nickel strip solution in to a 250 ml flask. Add 100 ml of CoMat 01-201 DISTILLED, DEIONIZED, DEMINERALIZED, OR REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) WATER and 5 ml of the prepared potassium iodide solution.

      2. Titrate with the prepared silver nitrate solution to faint turbidity against dark background.

   3. Calculate the amount of free sodium cyanide.

      1. 10 ml sample.

         1. oz/ gal free sodium cyanide = ml silver nitrate solution (0.1M) x 0.131.

      2. 5 ml sample.

         1. oz/ gal free sodium cyanide = ml silver nitrate solution (0.1M) x 0.262.

   4. Calculate the amount of free potasium cyanide.

      1. 10 ml sample.

         1. oz/ gal free potassium cyanide = ml silver nitrate solution (0.1N) x 0.174.

      2. 5 ml sample.

         1. oz/ gal free potassium cyanide = ml silver nitrate solution (0.1N) x 0.348.

2. SUBTASK 70-33-80-200-002 Test and Control of the SPS-26 Solution Used for Nickel Stripping Plasma Coatings

   1. Deleted.

3. SUBTASK 70-33-80-200-003 Test and Control of CoMat 12-015 and CoMat 12-016 Corrosion Preventive Thin Film

   1. Frequency: 2 weeks.

   2. Test and requirements:

      Copper corrosion: ASTM corrosion standard 1b maximum and no pitting.

      Volatile content: 55 to 85 percent.

      Water content: 2.5 to 7.5 percent.

4. SUBTASK 70-33-80-200-004 Test and Control of CoMat 12-027 Corrosion Preventative Compound

   1. Frequency: 1 month.

   2. Test and requirements:

      Copper corrosion: ASTM corrosion standard 1b maximum and no pitting.

      Volatile content: 60 to 94 percent.
