TASK 70-33-86-100-501 Make-Up Of The Solutions To Clean By Electrolysis

Introduction

This procedure is for the electrolytic cleaning of components which uses cyanide based solutions. Alternative non-cyanide solutions are included, for use when cyanide based solutions are not acceptable.

General

Always obey the instructions given in Safety Precautions.

When one of these solutions is to be used as a preparation to a plating procedure, Solution A is recommended. When the solution is to be used as a preparation to an etch inspection, Solution B is recommended because it is better to increase the strength of the sodium hydroxide solution.

The solutions are aqueous. It is necessary to contain the solutions in a mild steel tank or other applicable container.

NOTE

To identify the consumable materials refer to the PCI.

NOTE

It is permitted to use the non-cyanide solutions (Solutions C and D) as alternatives to either Solution A or B.

Safety Requirements

WARNING

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO OBTAIN AND OBSERVE THE MANUFACTURER'S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. THESE CONTAIN INFORMATION SUCH AS, HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING AND USE, CONTROL MEASURES, AND ALSO TO TAKE LOCAL REGULATIONS INTO CONSIDERATION.

WARNING

THIS PROCEDURE INCLUDES THE USE OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, SODIUM CYANIDE, OR POTASSIUM CYANIDE. CYANIDE SALTS AND/OR SOLUTIONS ARE VERY POISONOUS AND WORK VERY QUICKLY. THEY GIVE OFF HYDROGEN CYANIDE GAS, WHEN MIXED WITH ACID, WHICH CAN CAUSE DEATH. THE PRECAUTIONS THAT FOLLOW MUST ALWAYS BE OBEYED.

WARNING

OPERATORS MUST ALWAYS USE THE APPROVED PROTECTIVE CLOTHING SUPPLIED.

WARNING

ALWAYS KEEP FINGERNAILS CUT SHORT. BE SURE FINGERNAILS ARE ALWAYS FULLY CLEAN BEFORE YOU EAT, DRINK, OR SMOKE.

WARNING

DO NOT KEEP ITEMS THAT ARE USED TO EAT OR DRINK WITH IN THE SAME LOCATION WITH CYANIDE. ALSO, YOU MUST NOT EAT, DRINK, OR SMOKE AT SUCH LOCATIONS.

WARNING

ALWAYS KEEP CYANIDE IN A SAFE LOCATION, WHERE ACCESS IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO APPROVED PERSONS.

WARNING

CYANIDE SOLUTION PRECAUTIONS:
POISONING WILL OCCUR IF YOU SWALLOW CYANIDE, BREATHE HYDROCYANIC GAS OR IF CYANIDE OR HYDROCYANIC GAS ABSORBS THROUGH YOUR SKIN.
WARNING INDICATIONS OF POISONING ARE DIZZINESS, NAUSEA, GENERAL WEAKNESS AND HEADACHE, PALPITATIONS, FEELING OF SUFFOCATION AND TIGHTNESS IN THROAT, PALLOR, DEEP BREATHING AND UNCONSCIOUSNESS.

WARNING

A SUPPLY OF CYANIDE ANTIDOTE MUST ALWAYS BE EASILY AVAILABLE.

WARNING

ALWAYS KEEP CYANIDE SALTS AND SOLUTIONS AWAY FROM ACIDS BECAUSE THE CYANIDE AND ACIDS WILL REACT TO GIVE OFF HYDROGEN CYANIDE GAS.

WARNING

ALWAYS OBEY THE INSTRUCTIONS OF QUALIFIED SAFETY PERSONNEL.

WARNING

SODIUM HYDROXIDE SOLUTIONS CAN BURN. ALWAYS KEEP THESE SOLUTIONS AWAY FROM YOUR EYES AND SKIN. YOU MUST USE THE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING SUPPLIED, TOGETHER WITH RUBBER GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION. IF YOU GET SODIUM HYDROXIDE IN YOUR EYES, FULLY FLUSH WITH CLEAN WATER; THEN GET MEDICAL TREATMENT IMMEDIATELY.

WARNING

A SUPPLY OF BUFFERED PHOSPHATE SOLUTION MUST ALWAYS BE EASILY AVAILABLE, TO APPLY TO BURNS.

WARNING

BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU ADD COMPOUNDS, WHICH CONTAIN SOLID SODIUM HYDROXIDE, TO WATER, BECAUSE HEAT IS GIVEN OFF WHEN THE COMPOUND DISSOLVES. MAKE MUCH MOVEMENT OF THE SOLUTION, WITH AIR OR MECHANICAL METHODS, AS YOU ADD THE COMPOUND TO THE SURFACE OF THE SOLUTION. DO NOT ADD LARGE QUANTITIES OF THE COMPOUND TO ONE SMALL AREA OF THE TANK BECAUSE THE SOLUTION WILL BOIL.

WARNING

ALWAYS OBEY THE INSTRUCTIONS OF QUALIFIED SAFETY PERSONNEL.

      1. NOTE

Solution B is an alternative to Solution A.

        Solution B.

      1. NOTE

This solution is based on proprietary products. It is a heavy duty alkaline cleaner that is phosphate-free and cyanide-free.

        Solution C (Solution Code 58).

      2. For the make-up and maintenance of Solution C (Solution Code 58), refer to TASK 70-33-27-300-503, SUBTASK 70-33-28-300-034.

      1. NOTE

        Solution D is a non-cyanide alternative to Solutions A and B.

        Solution D.
