Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-35-07-350-001 Mechanical Finish of Titanium Parts

    2. A mechanical finish is to polish and/or deburr by hand, but not to grind.

    3. Silicon carbide abrasives must always be used to polish the surfaces of titanium parts.

    4. Silicon carbide or aluminum oxide abrasives can be used to break edges and remove burrs from holes.

    5. Silicon carbide abrasive wheels and/or rotary files are used to prepare welds, remove unwanted weld, and repair welds.

    6. Make sure that titanium parts do not become too hot, when they are polished. A light and equal pressure to the polish wheel always gives the best result; because it permits the abrasive to cut freely and does not become clogged. Heavy or too much pressure will cause the polish wheel to become clogged; which can result in surface damage such as orange peel or burning, to the metal.

    7. If sparks occur during mechanical finish procedures, make sure that sufficient protection is given to the part and adjacent areas; to prevent burn damage caused by the sparks.

    8. Rough abrasives are used to remove the base metal and the worst of the damage from the parts. To polish a surface to a high quality finish different types of abrasives are used. Start with a rough abrasive and continue, in steps, with smoother abrasives until you get the necessary result. Always remove each tool or grind line before the subsequent abrasive is used.

    1. SUBTASK 70-35-07-350-002 Prepare the Cloth Wheels to Abrasive Clean and Polish

    2. NOTE

The cement must be fully mixed in a large container (for at least 15 minutes) before it is put into a smaller container from which it is applied.

Apply a layer of CoMat 05-065 CEMENT - ROUGHING, POLISHING, CoMat 05-066 CEMENT - FINISHING, POLISHING or an approved equivalent to seal the new wheels; or to seal used wheels that have an unsatisfactory bond or weak sides.

    3. Air dry the cement, until it is tacky.

    4. NOTE

If necessary, hot water can be added to the cement to make it thinner; but mix it fully and regularly.
The cement must be used in less than four hours after it is removed from the large container; if not it must be discarded.

Push the external diameter of the wheel on to a cement filled sponge, with a roller effect, to apply the cement to a depth of approximately 0.125 in. (3.175 mm). Use a one inch nylon brush to smooth the cement to a symmetrical layer.

    5. Dry the cement in an oven for one hour; at a temperature of approximately 200 deg F (93 deg C) and a relative humidity of 60 percent.

    6. CAUTION

DO NOT MIX THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ABRASIVE GRIT.

      NOTE

CoMat 05-065 CEMENT - ROUGHING, POLISHING can be used with all types of abrasive grit but it is usually used with the rougher types (Types 60 to 80). CoMat 05-066 CEMENT - FINISHING, POLISHING is used with the smoother types of abrasive grit (Types 150 or less) to finish and/or polish.

Move the wheel through the abrasive grit to push the grit into the cement.

    7. Do Step to Step again to apply a second layer.

    8. Dry the wheel in an oven for eight hours at a temperature of approximately 200 deg F (93 deg C) and a relative humidity of 60 percent.

    9. Before the wheel is used, run it against a length of circular steel to break-up the outer surface.
