Procedure
Use only CoMat 03-010 ARGON GAS or CoMat 03-117 ARGON GAS or CoMat 03-118 ARGON GAS or a vacuum at temperatures above 1175 deg F (635 deg C) or with configurations in which the cleaning solution can get caught. Heat treatment in air at these temperatures will cause a build-up of surface oxide which must subsequently be descaled.
Use CoMat 03-010 ARGON GAS or CoMat 03-117 ARGON GAS or CoMat 03-118 ARGON GAS or a vacuum when the stress-relief is for more than one hour at 1150 deg F (621 deg C).
Increase the temperature of the part to 1125 to 1175 deg F (607 to 635 deg C) and hold for one to two hours, or to 1175 to 1225 deg F (635 to 663 deg C) and hold for 10 to 15 minutes. Air, CoMat 03-010 ARGON GAS or CoMat 03-117 ARGON GAS or CoMat 03-118 ARGON GAS or vacuum is a satisfactory atmosphere. Exceptions are as follows:
SUBTASK 70-37-17-370-001 Stress-Relief for Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn Parts (Except Blades)
Increase the temperature of the part to 1075 to 1125 deg F (579 to 607 deg C) and hold for 90 minutes. Air, CoMat 03-010 ARGON GAS, CoMat 03-117 ARGON GAS, CoMat 03-118 ARGON GAS, or a vacuum is a permitted atmosphere.
SUBTASK 70-37-17-370-002 Stress-Relief for Titanium Parts (Except Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn Parts) and Ti-6Al-4V Welded Low Cycle Fatigue (LCF) Life Limited Static Parts
