TASK 70-38-07-380-501 The Procedure To Apply Air-Drying Primer (Epoxy Type) And Air-Drying Enamel (Epoxy-Polyurethane)
General
The primers and enamels used in this TASK are of the two-pack epoxy type. They must only be used when specified in the applicable Engine Manual.
This procedure gives good corrosion protection up to a maximum continuous temperature in operation of 428 deg F (220 deg C). The protective layer is also resistant to engine lubricants, fuels and hydraulic fluids.
The primer and enamel can be used for up to approximately 8 hours after they have been mixed. This time will change with different ambient temperatures, thus only sufficient for immediate use must be mixed.

Procedure
Remove paint from the parts as given in the SPM TASK 70-11-10-300-503.
Aluminum parts must be prepared as given in the SPM TASK 70-38-02-300-503. Then put the parts in to an oven to dry at a temperature of between 250 and 300 deg F (120 to 150 deg C) for 1 hour.
Abrasive blast steel parts as given in the SPM TASK 70-12-01-120-501. Then put the parts in to an oven to dry at a temperature of between 250 and 300 deg F (120 to 150 deg C) for 1 hour.
Prepare the parts.
Vapor degrease the parts as given in the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503.
Apply CoMat 02-019 TAPE, ADHESIVE PAPER HEAT RESISTING MASKING or the correct covers to areas which are not to be painted. Unwanted paint can be removed with the use of a lint-free cloth which is moist with CoMat 07-031 PRIMER THINNERS.
Mix together equal volumes of the two materials of CoMat 07-030 TWO-PACK EPOXY AIR DRYING PRIMER, GREY. Make sure the compound is fully mixed.
If you use a spray gun, the viscosity of the primer is to be between 16 and 20 seconds B.S.3900 Part 6 Flow Cup Type B4 at 68 deg F (20 deg C) and must be measured before use. The viscosity can be changed with the use of CoMat 07-031 PRIMER THINNERS.
Immediately clean all equipment with CoMat 07-034 BRUSH WASH after use.
Mix the primer.
Remove unwanted primer from the part with a lint-free cloth which is moist with CoMat 07-031 PRIMER THINNERS. Do not apply one more layer of primer to these parts.
If only a thin layer of primer is permitted on a part, remove unwanted primer as follows:
NOTE
It is not necessary to let the parts become dry before polymerization in conveyor ovens. It is essential to let them become dry before polymerization in a static oven.Apply the primer.
Mix together two volumes of enamel base FE93 with one volume of activator No. 93 from CoMat 07-032 ENAMEL, POLYURETHANE, AIR-DRYING, TWO-PART, GREY.
NOTE
The thinners used are not interchangeable between primer and enamel. All equipment used must be clean and dry. Moist equipment will have an effect on the activator used.If you use a spray gun, the viscosity of the enamel is to be between 14 and 18 seconds B.S.3900 Part A6 Flow Cup Type B4 at 68 deg F (20 deg C) and must be measured before use. The viscosity can be changed with the use of CoMat 07-033 POLYURETHANE THINNER.
Mix the enamel.
The protective layer thickness (primer and enamel) on magnesium parts which have had maximum protection applied must be between 0.004 and 0.008in (0.101 to 0.203 mm). On all other parts this thickness must be between 0.002 and 0.004in (0.050 to 0.101 mm). This thickness must be measured with an approved instrument.
If the general protective layer is unsatisfactory remove the layer as given in the SPM TASK 70-11-10-300-503, then do steps 4.B. to H. again. If only small areas are unsatisfactory, refer to Step.
Inspect the protective layer.
SUBTASK 70-38-07-380-001 The Procedure to Apply a General Protective Layer
Use CoMat 05-021 WATERPROOF SILICON CARBIDE to prepare the area where the protective layer is to be applied.
Cold liquid degrease the parts as given in the SPM TASK 70-11-14-300-503.
Mix together equal volumes of the two materials of CoMat 07-030 TWO-PACK EPOXY AIR DRYING PRIMER, GREY. Make sure the compound is fully mixed.
NOTE
To prevent a problem in very hot temperatures the primer can be applied immediately after it is mixed.
Use a spray gun or CoMat 02-004 PAINT BRUSH to apply one layer of primer. Let the part become dry for 10 minutes.
Immediately clean all equipment with CoMat 07-034 BRUSH WASH after use.
Mix the enamel.
Use a spray gun or CoMat 02-004 PAINT BRUSH to apply one layer of enamel. Let the part become dry for 10 minutes.
