TASK 70-38-07-380-501 The Procedure To Apply Air-Drying Primer (Epoxy Type) And Air-Drying Enamel (Epoxy-Polyurethane)

General

The primers and enamels used in this TASK are of the two-pack epoxy type. They must only be used when specified in the applicable Engine Manual.

This procedure gives good corrosion protection up to a maximum continuous temperature in operation of 428 deg F (220 deg C). The protective layer is also resistant to engine lubricants, fuels and hydraulic fluids.

The primer and enamel can be used for up to approximately 8 hours after they have been mixed. This time will change with different ambient temperatures, thus only sufficient for immediate use must be mixed.

      3. Magnesium parts must be chromated as given in TASK 70-38-33-300-503. Then oven dry at a temperature of between 250 and 300 deg F (120 to 150 deg C) for 1 hour.

      4. Aluminum parts must be prepared as given in the SPM TASK 70-38-02-300-503. Then put the parts in to an oven to dry at a temperature of between 250 and 300 deg F (120 to 150 deg C) for 1 hour.

      5. Abrasive blast steel parts as given in the SPM TASK 70-12-01-120-501. Then put the parts in to an oven to dry at a temperature of between 250 and 300 deg F (120 to 150 deg C) for 1 hour.

    2. Vapor degrease the parts as given in the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503.

    3. Apply CoMat 02-019 TAPE, ADHESIVE PAPER HEAT RESISTING MASKING or the correct covers to areas which are not to be painted. Unwanted paint can be removed with the use of a lint-free cloth which is moist with CoMat 07-031 PRIMER THINNERS.

      1. Mix the primer.

      2. Mix together equal volumes of the two materials of CoMat 07-030 TWO-PACK EPOXY AIR DRYING PRIMER, GREY. Make sure the compound is fully mixed.

      3. NOTE

To prevent a problem in very hot temperatures the primer can be applied immediately after it is mixed.

Do not use the primer for approximately 30 minutes.

      4. If you use a spray gun, the viscosity of the primer is to be between 16 and 20 seconds B.S.3900 Part 6 Flow Cup Type B4 at 68 deg F (20 deg C) and must be measured before use. The viscosity can be changed with the use of CoMat 07-031 PRIMER THINNERS.

      5. Immediately clean all equipment with CoMat 07-034 BRUSH WASH after use.

      1. NOTE

It is not necessary to let the parts become dry before polymerization in conveyor ovens. It is essential to let them become dry before polymerization in a static oven.

        Apply the primer.

      2. Apply with a spray gun one layer of the primer compound. Let the primer become dry for 10 minutes.

        1. If only a thin layer of primer is permitted on a part, remove unwanted primer as follows:

        2. Remove unwanted primer from the part with a lint-free cloth which is moist with CoMat 07-031 PRIMER THINNERS. Do not apply one more layer of primer to these parts.

      3. Apply with a spray gun one more layer of primer to give a minimum dry layer thickness of 0.001in (0.025 mm). Let the part become dry for 15 to 20 minutes if necessary.

      4. Do steps E.(1) and E.(3) again if it is necessary to give magnesium parts maximum protection. Let the parts become dry for 10 minutes if necessary.

      5. To polymerize the primer, heat the parts to between 248 and 266 deg F (120 to 130 deg C) and maintain this temperature for a minimum of 30 minutes. Alternatively let the parts become dry at a minimum temperature of 60 deg F (16 deg C) for 4 hours.

      1. Mix the enamel.

      2. Mix together two volumes of enamel base FE93 with one volume of activator No. 93 from CoMat 07-032 ENAMEL, POLYURETHANE, AIR-DRYING, TWO-PART, GREY.

      3. NOTE

To prevent a problem in very hot temperatures the enamel can be applied immediately after it is mixed.

Do not use the enamel for approximately 30 minutes.

      4. NOTE

The thinners used are not interchangeable between primer and enamel.
All equipment used must be clean and dry. Moist equipment will have an effect on the activator used.

If you use a spray gun, the viscosity of the enamel is to be between 14 and 18 seconds B.S.3900 Part A6 Flow Cup Type B4 at 68 deg F (20 deg C) and must be measured before use. The viscosity can be changed with the use of CoMat 07-033 POLYURETHANE THINNER.

      1. NOTE
