TASK 70-42-03-400-501 Install The Tab-type Key Washers

General

This TASK gives instructions on how to bend the keys and elliptical parts of single-hole key washers; also, key washers for use with more than one hole, or set against the flange of the part detail.

A straight key is one that is to be bent after the key washer is installed; while a bent key is one that is bent when the key washer is made.

Key washers must be installed with the straight keys set away from the axis of the parts to be locked. The bent keys (Refer to Figure - Key B) must always be set against the mating surface (Refer to Figure - Detail at C) or against the side of the hole (Refer to Figure - Detail A); to prevent movement of the parts to be locked.

NOTE

To identify the consumable materials refer to the PCI.

NOTE

Key washers must be used one time only. Use a new key washer for each assembly.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-42-03-400-001 Bend the Straight Keys

    2. All straight keys must be bent after the assembly procedure to make sure that the key washers can not be used again. At least one key must be bent to give the clearance shown on Figure - Detail B; with at least 75 percent of its width (that is, AS MEASURED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE KEY) engaged with the flat side of the part to be locked (Refer to Figure). The remaining straight key or keys can then be bent as necessary.

    1. SUBTASK 70-42-03-400-002 Bend the Bent Keys

    2. The bent keys (Refer to Figure - Key B) must be bent to give the clearance shown on Figure - Detail at C.

    1. SUBTASK 70-42-03-400-003 Install the Elliptical Key Washers

    2. When elliptical key washers are installed they must be bent across a full flat of the part to be locked (Refer to Figure - Detail C); to give the clearance shown on Figure - Detail B.

    1. SUBTASK 70-42-03-400-004 Install Key Washers for Use With More Than One Hole

    2. The data specified in paragraphs 3. and 5. must also be applied to the keys for each hole; when a key washer for use with more than one hole is installed.

    1. SUBTASK 70-42-03-400-005 Install the Fuel Nozzle Nut Key Washers

    2. Apply a pressure to bend the keys of the fuel nozzle nut key washers; they must not be hit to bend the keys.

    1. SUBTASK 70-42-03-400-006 Control the Position of the Key Washer

    2. Use CoMat 02-081 PENCIL - METAL MARKING(HARD), to make marks on the key washer and on its adjacent mating surface; which does not move. This will show if the key washer turns, when the nut is tightened, which will cause damage to the internal keys.

    1. SUBTASK 70-42-03-210-001 Basic Specification

      1. The key washers are correctly installed when this basic specification is applied:

      2. A new key washer must always be used.

      3. The keys must always by bent as specified in paragraphs 2. to 8.

      4. When the keys are bent the key washer must not shake; also, the locked parts must not become loose.
