TASK 70-42-03-400-501 Install The Tab-type Key Washers
General
This TASK gives instructions on how to bend the keys and elliptical parts of single-hole key washers; also, key washers for use with more than one hole, or set against the flange of the part detail.
A straight key is one that is to be bent after the key washer is installed; while a bent key is one that is bent when the key washer is made.
Key washers must be installed with the straight keys set away from the axis of the parts to be locked. The bent keys (Refer to Figure - Key B) must always be set against the mating surface (Refer to Figure - Detail at C) or against the side of the hole (Refer to Figure - Detail A); to prevent movement of the parts to be locked.

NONEProcedure
All straight keys must be bent after the assembly procedure to make sure that the key washers can not be used again. At least one key must be bent to give the clearance shown on Figure - Detail B; with at least 75 percent of its width (that is, AS MEASURED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE KEY) engaged with the flat side of the part to be locked (Refer to Figure). The remaining straight key or keys can then be bent as necessary.
SUBTASK 70-42-03-400-001 Bend the Straight Keys
Use CoMat 02-081 PENCIL - METAL MARKING(HARD), to make marks on the key washer and on its adjacent mating surface; which does not move. This will show if the key washer turns, when the nut is tightened, which will cause damage to the internal keys.
