Procedure

    1. General

      1. Plain retaining rings

      2. Plain retaining rings can have a lightly rounded edge on one side and a sharp edge on the opposite side. The lightly round edge, which is caused by the stamping die, is not a bevel, so the ring must not be put in the beveled retaining ring group.

      3. Plain retaining rings must only be installed in grooves with 90 degree sides. When one side of a plain retaining ring is seen to have a very sharp corner, that side must be installed away from the part to be locked, so that the sharp edge side pushes against the groove.

      1. Beveled retaining rings

      2. Beveled retaining rings have the added function that they can decrease the end play, from the part to be locked. This type of ring has a 15 degree bevel on one side, which is installed in a mating beveled groove, on the side away from the part to be locked.

      3. Beveled retaining rings must only be used with beveled grooves, and must always be installed with the flat side of the ring against the part to be locked, as shown in Figure.
