General
On engine parts made of materials that are not corrosion resistant, it will be necessary to apply protection if they are permitted to stay in one position for longer than a few minutes. Examples of materials that are not corrosion resistant include chromoloy, alloys of aluminium, magnesium and copper, and corrosion-resistant alloys that are nitrided or malcolmized. Parts that contain metals that are not equivalent also corrode.
Protection for Parts in Process
Materials that are not corrosion resistant must be kept from damage during the inspection and repair procedure. If the serviceable part is touched before the preservation time has expired, or if the preservation time expires, the preservation must be done again immediately.
Protection of Parts for Storage
Painted surfaces: In general, a light-weight dust cover is sufficient to keep painted surfaces safe from corrosion. If the paint is damaged or not there, it must be painted again before it goes into storage.
Plated surfaces: In general, it is not necessary to have protection other than a light-weight dust cover. Silver plated parts must be wound with anti-tarnish paper and kept in sulfide-free containers.
Uncoated surfaces. Metal surfaces that are not satisfactory coated or plated are most sensitive to corrosion. Iron and Steel alloys are usually known to be bad in this area. In general it is not necessary to have protection for Stainless Steels (such as 32T and A286); but, the 400-series of stainless steels which are brass and bronze must have protection.
