Surface protection is usually applied to the engine parts, when they are made; to prevent corrosion of the materials in bad conditions. The standards of protection applied are those which are most resistant, to the many different conditions found around the world.
In general, where the manual refers to the repair of surface protection (that is, after operation where there is a high risk of corrosion), such procedures are only recommended; because many operators do not get corrosion in their engines. It is then a decision of the operator, from the condition of the engines at overhaul, if repairs are necessary.
The torque load values for these items only give the correct axial loads, when the plating is in good condition.
These instructions do not apply to screw threads; which are usually silver or cadmium plated.
More data on the repair of surface protection is given in the Engine Manual.
