Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 71-11-43-350-053 Disassemble the Connector Assembly

      WARNING

PUT ON PROTECTIVE GOGGLES WHEN YOU CUT THE LOCKWIRE. PIECES OF THE LOCKWIRE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR EYES.
    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Cut and remove the lockwire from the screws, the coupling nut and the shell.

      2. Be careful not to cause damage to the lockwire holes.

      1. If the backshell is not a straight type, make a mark on the shell which aligns with the master keyway.

      2. Use a marking pen.

    3. Remove the screws and the strain-relief clamp from the coupling nut.

      1. Remove the coupling nut from the shell.

      2. Use the strap wrench. Move the coupling nut and the grounding ferrule away from the shell. Be careful not to cause damage to the ground-shields of the cables.

      1. Remove the shell from the connector.

      2. Use the strap wrench. Move the shell away from the connector. Be careful not to cause damage to the ground-shields of the cables.

    1. SUBTASK 71-11-43-350-054 Remove the Contacts from the Connection

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Attach a temporary identification tag to each of the cables in the connector.

      2. Write on the tag the number of the connector hole from which the cable came.

      1. Remove a contact from the connector.

      2. Use the applicable inserter/extractor tool. Put the cable in the groove of the tool. Push the tool along the cable and in to the rear of the connector until it touches the contact (the tool will open the collet). Hold the cable and the tool together and remove the contact from the rear of the connector.

      1. Remove the remaining contacts from the connector.

      2. Do Step again for the remaining contacts.

    1. SUBTASK 71-11-43-350-055 Remove the Components of the Connector Assembly

      1. Remove the shell, the grounding ferrule and the coupling nut from the harness.

      2. Be careful not to cause damage to the contacts or the ground-shields.

    1. SUBTASK 71-11-43-220-057 Examine the Components

      1. Examine the connector, the contacts, the coupling nut, the grounding ferrule, the screws and the shell.

      2. Refer to Inspection-000 TASK 71-11-43-200-300. Reject the parts which are unserviceable.

    1. SUBTASK 71-11-43-350-056 Install the Replacement Components of the Connector Assembly

      CAUTION

THE REPLACEMENT COMPONENTS MUST HAVE THE SAME PART NUMBERS AS THE COMPONENTS WHICH WERE REMOVED. INCORRECT COMPONENTS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SYSTEM.
    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Install the new or serviceable components to the harness.

        1. Install the components in the sequence that follows:

        2. The coupling nut, the grounding ferrule and the shell.

        3. Be careful not to cause damage to the contacts or the ground-shields.

    1. SUBTASK 71-11-43-350-057 Install the Contacts to the Connection

      CAUTION

THE CONTACTS MUST BE INSTALLED IN THEIR CORRECT POSITIONS IN THE CONNECTOR. IF THEY ARE INSTALLED IN THE INCORRECT POSITIONS THE SYSTEM CAN BE DAMAGED.
    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Find the contact which must be installed in the center hole of the connector.

      2. You must install the contacts at the center of the connector first and work out.

      1. Install the center contact to the connector.

      2. Use the applicable inserter/extractor tool.

      3. Put the cable in the groove of the tool.

      4. Push the tool along the cable until it touches the flange of the contact.

      5. Hold the cable and the tool together and use the tool to push the contact in to the connector hole.

      6. When the contact is in the correct position in the connector hole, release the cable and remove the tool.

      7. Lightly pull the cable to make sure that the contact is engaged correctly in the collet.

      1. Install the remaining contacts to the connector.

      2. Do Step again for the remaining contacts.

      3. Make sure the contacts are installed in the positions noted during their removal.

      4. Install the contacts nearest to the center first.

      1. Remove the identification tags from the cables.

      2. Remove the temporary tags which were installed in Step, above

    1. SUBTASK 71-11-43-350-058 Assemble the Connector Assembly

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Install the shell to the connector.

      2. Use the strap wrench to tighten the shell.

      3. If the backshell is not a straight type, align the mark (made in Step, above) with the master keyway.

      1. Install the coupling nut to the shell.

      2. Put the ground-shields an equal distance apart around the shell.

      3. Push the ground ferrule along the harness until it touches the ground-shields.

      4. Put the ground-shields through the coupling nut.

      5. Put two drops of the CoMat 08-026 THREADLOCKING MATERIAL, opposite to each other, on the threads of the shell.

      6. Install the coupling nut to the shell.

      7. Use the torque wrench and the strap wrench to torque the coupling nut to 10 lbfin. (1.13 Nm).

      1. Install the strain-relief clamp to the coupling nut.

      2. Make sure that all of the twists and bends are out of the cables.

      3. Attach the clamp to the coupling nut with the two screws.

      4. Use the torque wrench to torque the screws to between 10 and 20 lbfin. (1.13 and 2.26 Nm).

    1. SUBTASK 71-11-43-750-054 Do a Continuity and Insulation Test on the Connector Assembly

      1. Do the test for continuity and insulation.

      2. Refer to Testing TASK 71-11-43-700-301.

    1. SUBTASK 71-11-43-350-059 Safety the Connector Assembly

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Safety the connector assembly.

      2. Use the applicable lockwire. Make sure that the connector, the shell, the coupling nut and the screws are all safetied.

    1. SUBTASK 71-11-43-850-053 Put the Repair Scheme Number on the Harness

      1. Put the repair scheme number VRS2979 on the identification sleeve of the harness, adjacent to the part number.
