TASK 72-31-00-540-001 LP Compressor (LPC) Fan Module - Unpack

General

This TASK gives two methods to remove the LP compressor (fan) module from the shipping container.

- Use method 1 if you install the LP compressor (fan) module on to the storage stand (vertical type).

- Use method 2 if you install the LP compressor (fan) module on to the storage stand (horizontal type).

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC. Only the primary Fig/item numbers are used. For the service bulletin alpha variants refer to the IPC.

For all parts identified in a different Chapter/Section/Subject, the applicable Chapter/Section/Subject comes before the Fig/item number.

NOTE

Special tools are identified in the procedure by the tool primary number.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-31-00-220-053 Do the Documentation Check

    1. Put the LP compressor (fan) module, which is installed in the shipping container, on a work area.

      2. Remove the module records from the container.

      1. Remove the cover of the record receptacle in the container.

      2. Remove the record container from the record receptacle.

      3. Open the record container and remove the module records.

      4. Install the cover in to the record receptacle.

    3. Read the module records and make sure that the stage 1 fan disk is in less than the life limit.

    2. SUBTASK 72-31-00-540-051 Open the Shipping Container

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Push the knob in the relief valve in the container to release air pressure in the container.

    3. Remove the bolts and the nuts which attach the cover section of the container to the base section.

      4. Remove the cover section from the base section.

      1. Install the applicable sling to the cover section.

      2. Attach the sling to a hoist.

      3. Lift the cover section with the sling and remove the cover section from the base section.

      4. Use the blocks to protect the sealing surface of the cover section if the cover section is put on the floor.

    4. SUBTASK 72-31-00-540-056 Examine the Front Surfaces on the LP Compressor (Fan) Module

    1. Visually examine the surfaces for corrosion and damage.

    5. SUBTASK 72-31-00-540-052-001 Remove the LP Compressor (Fan) Module from the Shipping Container (Method 1)

      1. Remove the flange of the container to release the module from the base section, Figure.

      1. Remove the bolt from the fan support frame.

      2. Remove the spring washer, the plain washer and the flange from the disk front hub of the module.

      2. Install IAE 1J12101 Vertical sling 1 off to the module, Figure.

      1. Put the vertical sling on the blade front retaining ring of the module.

      2. Safety the vertical sling with the eight plain washers and the bolts.

      3. Attach the vertical sling to a second hoist.

    3. Slowly lift the module with the vertical sling until the module is clear of the base section.

    4. Put the flange, the spring washer and the plain washer in to the container parts pocket(s) in the shipping container.

      5. Remove the protection cover (part of the container) from the curvic teeth of the fan disk of the module, Figure.

      1. Remove the three knurled knobs and stifle plates from the module. Remove the protection cover.

    6. Put the knurled knobs, the stifle plates and the protection cover in to the container parts pocket(s) in the shipping container.

    6. SUBTASK 72-31-00-540-052-002 Remove the LP Compressor (Fan) Module from the Shipping Container (Method 2)

      1. Remove the flange (part of the shipping container) to release the module from the base section of the shipping container, Figure.

      1. Remove the bolt (part of the shipping container) from the support seat (part of the shipping container).

      2. Remove the spring washer, the plain washer and the flange (part of the shipping container) from the disk front hub of the module.

      2. Install the slinging tools on to the LP Compressor (fan) module, Figure and Figure.

        1. Install IAE 1J12104 Sling adapter 1 off on to the LP Compressor (fan) module.

        1. Attach a hoist to the link (part of the sling adapter) and move it above the module.

        2. Lower the sling adapter and attach the flange of the sling adapter onto the forward flange of the module with the 12 bolts (part of the sling adapter).

        2. Install IAE 1J12105 Cantileer sling 1 off to the sling adapter.

        1. Attach the second hoist to the shackle (part of the cantilever sling) and move it adjacent to the sling adapter.

        2. Install the cantilever sling to the sling adapter and safety them with the quick release pin (part of the sling adapter).

        3. Adjust the centre of gravity of the assembled slinging tools and the LP compressor (fan) module.

        1. Turn the adjustment handle to align the witness hole in the side plate with the S2-mark on the cantilever sling beam.

        2. Lock the adjustment handle in position.

      4. Remove the first hoist from the link of the sling adapter and attach it to the lifting ring (part of the cantilever sling) and tighten the hoist rope/chains.

      5. Engage the quick release pin (part the cantilever sling) to the outer holes of the bracket of the cantilever sling.

      6. Remove the second hoist from the shackle of the cantilever sling.

      7. Attach the second hoist to the link of the sling adapter and tighten the hoist rope/chains.

      3. NOTE

        Do this operation with the two hoist operators and the two persons to help.

        Remove the LP compressor (fan) module from the shipping container, Figure.

      1. Slowly lift the two hoists equally at the same time until the module is clear of the shipping container.

      2. Disengage the quick release pin of the cantilever sling from the outer holes and engage to inner holes of the bracket of the cantilever sling.

      3. Adjust the two hoists to turn the module to the horizontal position.

      4. Remove the second hoist from the link of the sling adapter.

    4. Put the flange, the spring washer and the plain washer in to the container parts pocket(s) in the shipping container, Figure.

      5. Remove the protection cover (part of the shipping container) from the curvic teeth of the module, Figure.

      1. Remove the three knurled knobs and stifle plates (part of the shipping container) from the module.

    6. Put the knurled knobs, the stifle plates and the protection cover in to the container parts pocket(s) in the shipping container.

    8. SUBTASK 72-31-00-540-057 Examine the Rear Surfaces on the LP Compressor (Fan) Module

    1. Visually examine the surfaces for corrosion and damage.

    9. SUBTASK 72-31-00-540-053-001 Install the LP Compressor (Fan) Module on to the Storage Stand (Vertical Type) (Method 1)

      1. Install IAE 1J12181 Protection cover 1 off on to the curvic teeth of the fan disk, Figure.

      1. Install the protection cover on to the curvic teeth with the three bolts and washers.

      2. Tighten the bolts.

      2. Prepare the storage stand, Figure.

      1. Put the IAE 1J12110 Transportation and storage stand 1 off adjacent the module.

      2. Remove the wing nut and the clamp of the storage stand from the storage stand.

    3. Lower the module on to the storage stand.

      4. Remove the vertical sling from the module.

      1. Remove the eight bolts and plain washers which attach the vertical sling to the module.

      2. Remove the vertical sling from the module.

      3. Remove the vertical sling from the hoist.

    5. Safety the module to the storage stand with the clamp and the wing nut of the storage stand. Tighten the wing nut.

    10. SUBTASK 72-31-00-540-053-002 Install the LP Compressor (Fan) Module on to the Storage Stand (Horizontal Type) (Method 2)

    1. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      2. Prepare the storage stand.

      1. Put IAE 1J12019 Storage stand 1 off adjacent the module.

        2. Make sure that the guards are removed from the storage stand. If the guards are installed, remove them to make space for installation of the module to the storage stand.

        1. Remove the two quick release pins from each guard.

        2. Remove the guards from the storage stand.

    3. CAUTION

      DO NOT LET THE LP COMPRESSOR (FAN) MODULE HIT THE STORAGE STAND WHEN YOU MOVE THE MODULE. THE STORAGE STAND CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE MODULE.

      Slowly move the LP compressor (fan) module to the storage stand.

      4. Install the LP compressor (fan) module to the storage stand.

      1. CAUTION

        DO NOT HIT THE STAGE 1 FAN DISK WITH TOOLS WHEN YOU INSTALL AND TIGHTEN THE SCREWS. THE TOOLS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE DISK.

        Install the stage 1 fan disk to the support of the storage stand with three of the 24 screws and plain washers (part of the storage stand). The screws must be 120 degrees apart from each other.

    5. Tighten the screws lightly with IAE 1J12016 Special wrench 1 off.

      6. Adjust the centre of gravity of the assembled slinging tools.

      1. Turn the adjustment handle to align the witness hole in the side plate with S1-mark on the cantilever sling beam.

      2. Lock the adjustment handle in position.

      7. Remove the assembled slinging tools from the LP compressor (fan) module.

      1. Remove the 12 bolts which attach the sling adapter to the forward flange of the module.

    8. Install IAE 1J12180 Hub protector 1 off in the stage 1 fan disk.

    9. CAUTION

      DO NOT HIT THE STAGE 1 FAN DISK WITH TOOLS WHEN YOU INSTALL AND TIGHTEN THE SCREWS.

      Install the remaining 21 screws and plain washers.

    10. Tighten the 24 screws with the special wrench 1 off.

    11. Remove the hub protector from the stage 1 fan disk.

    12. WARNING

      INSTALL THE GUARDS NOT TO LET THE FAN BLADES HIT PERSONNEL. THE SHARP BLADE EDGES CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONNEL.

      Install all the four guards to the storage stand not to let the sharp fan blades hit personnel during storage and transportation. Safety each guard with the two quick release pins.

      13. Disassemble the assembled slinging tools.

      1. Attach the second hoist to the link of the sling adapter and turn the assembled slinging tools to the vertical position.

      2. Lower the assembled slinging tools on to the work bench.

      3. Disengage the quick release pin which attaches the cantilever sling to the sling adapter.

      4. Remove the second hoist from the link of the sling adapter and attach it to the shackle of the cantilever sling.

      5. Remove the first hoist from the lifting ring of the cantilever sling.

      6. Lift up the cantilever sling with the second hoist and remove it from the sling adapter.

    11. SUBTASK 72-31-00-540-054 Remove the Desiccant and the Humidity Indicator from the Base Section of the Shipping Container

    1. Remove the bags of the desiccant and the instruction card of the desiccant from the desiccant receptacle(s) in the base section. Discard the bags.

    2. Remove the humidity indicator from the humidity indicator holder in the base section. Discard the humidity indicator.

    12. SUBTASK 72-31-00-540-055 Do the Preservation Procedure for the Shipping Container

    1. Refer to Figure.

      2. Attach the cover section to the base section.

      1. Lift the cover section with the sling and move it above the base section.

      2. Align the guide hole(s) in the flange of the cover section guide pin(s) on the base section.

      3. Slowly lower the cover section on to the base section.

      4. Install the bolts and the nuts which attach the cover section to the base section. Tighten the nuts.

    3. Remove the sling from the cover section and the hoist.
