  1. TASK 72-32-00-990-501 Description and Operation of the LP Compressor/Intermediate Case Module

    1. Description

      1. The LP compressor (LPC)/intermediate case module, refer to Figure and Figure or Figure, includes the fan case and the intermediate structure. The two components are primary components to make the case module.

      2. V2500-A1: The intermediate structure fan frame is a one-piece welded structure with 10 inner and outer struts. The inner struts hold the LP compressor booster stage assembly and the components to make the front bearing compartment.

      3. V2500-A5: The intermediate structure fan frame is a one-piece welded structure with 10 inner and outer struts. The inner struts hold the LP compressor booster stage assembly and the components to make the front bearing compartment.

      4. The fan case is also a one-piece, welded structure. It is installed on the mounting pads on each outer strut end of the intermediate structure (fan frame) with bolts.

      5. The case module includes a front bearing compartment where No.1, No.2 and No.3 bearing are installed. The fan rotor and the LPC rotor are held by the No.1 and No.2 bearings in position. The No.3 bearing holds the front part of the HP compressor (HPC) rotor from which the power is supplied to the PTO system. These rotors and the bearing compartment are held by an intermediate structure of the case module.

      6. The case module also includes an internal gearbox. Torque is transmitted from the HPC through a bevel gear of the internal gearbox and a PTO shaft. The PTO shaft power output is then transmitted through an external gearbox to the engine accessories installed on the gearbox.

      7. V2500 A1: The LP compressor booster stage has three stages (1.5, 2 and 2.5 stages) and compresses the air received from the fan.

      8. V2500-A5: The LP compressor booster stage has four stages (1.5, 2, 2.3 and 2.5 stages) and compresses the air received from the fan.

      9. A booster stage bleed-mechanism is included in the case module at the rear of the LPC, refer to Figure or Figure. The mechanism operates to make the engine more stable during engine start and transient operation.

    2. Operation

      1. The booster stage LPC gets compressed air from the LPC fan. The air goes through each stage of the booster LPC, where it is compressed again. The air then goes in to the HPC.
