Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-03-350-069 Remove the Rubber Blocks from the No. 1 Strut Fairing Panel

      1. Remove the rubber blocks.

      2. Repair, VRS1903 TASK 72-32-03-300-003 (REPAIR-003).

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-03-230-068 Examine the No. 1 Strut Fairing Panel to Find the Ends of the Cracks by Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Fluorescent penetrant examine the cracked areas.

      2. Make sure the lengths of the cracks are not more than 1.0 in. (25.4 mm).

      3. Refer to SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-03-350-070 Drill the Stop Holes at the Ends of the Cracks in the No. 1 Strut Fairing Panel

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. CAUTION

        TITANIUM COMPONENTS. SILICONE CARBIDE TYPE WHEELS, STONES AND ABRASIVE PAPERS ARE TO BE USED FOR THIS REPAIR.
        ALUMINUM OXIDE MUST NOT BE USED.
        THE MATERIAL WILL OXIDIZE AND CRACK IF MECHANICAL CUTTERS ARE USED HEAVILY. THIS HAS OCCURRED IF THE COMPONENT SHOWS DARK STRAW TO BLUE DISCOLORATION.

        Drill the stop holes at the ends of the cracks.

      2. Use a 0.085 to 0.095 in. (2.16 to 2.41 mm) diameter drill.

      1. Remove all unwanted materials and oxidations from the areas to be welded.

      2. Use a pneumatic hand held grinder.

      3. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-31-01-310-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-03-310-052 Weld the Cracks and Stop Holes in the No. 1 Strut Fairing Panel

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Weld the cracks and stop holes.

      2. Manual tungsten inert gas (TIG) weld the cracks.

        Refer to the SPM TASK 70-31-01-310-501.

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. CAUTION

      Blend the outer and inner surfaces of the welded areas to the contour of adjacent areas.

      1. Re-shape the repaired areas, if there are corrugations or distortions in the repaired areas.

      2. Lightly hit around the deformed surface to smooth out.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-03-230-069 Examine the No. 1 Strut Fairing Panel

      1. Fluorescent penetrant examine the repaired areas.

      2. Make sure there are no cracks in the repaired areas.

      3. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-03-370-051 Stress-Relieve the No. 1 Strut Fairing Panel

      1. Heat treat the fairing panel.

      2. Heat the part to 1184 to 1220 deg F (640 to 660 deg C) and hold for 1 hour. Permitted atmospheres are vacuum or CoMat 03-010 ARGON GAS or CoMat 03-117 ARGON GAS or CoMat 03-118 ARGON GAS.

      3. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-37-00-370-501.

    2. Furnace cool the fairing panel in vacuum or argon atmosphere.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-03-220-127 Examine the No. 1 Strut Fairing Panel

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Visually examine the fairing panel.

      2. Make sure there are no corrugations or distortions on the sheet material of the fairing panel.

    3. Examine the flatness of the repaired areas.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-03-230-070 Examine the No. 1 Strut Fairing Panel

      1. Fluorescent penetrant examine the repaired areas.

      2. Make sure there are not cracks in the repaired areas.

      3. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-03-360-056 Install the New Rubber Blocks to the No. 1 Strut Fairing Panel

      1. Bond the new rubber blocks.

      2. Repair, VRS1903 TASK 72-32-03-300-003 (REPAIR-003).
