This TASK gives the procedure to repair the HP compressor variable vane levers by material removal.

TASKS identified by SPM TASK are in the standard practices and processes manual (SPM).

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-110-144 Chemically Clean

      1. Chemically clean the part.

      2. Refer to TASK 72-41-34-100-000 (CLEANING-000).

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-230-070 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a penetrant crack test.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

        Use penetrant crack test equipment.

        No cracks are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-350-051 Remove the Damage

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENTS - YOU MUST USE SILICON CARBIDE TYPE ABRASIVE WHEELS, STONES AND PAPERS TO DRESS, BLEND AND POLISH THIS COMPONENT.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENTS - MAXIMUM SPEED FOR MECHANICAL TOOLS MUST NOT BE MORE THAN 1000 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENTS - YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU REMOVE MATERIAL, BLEND AND POLISH, TO MAKE SMOOTH THAT NO SPARKS ARE PRODUCED.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENTS - IF THE MATERIAL SHOWS A CHANGE IN COLOR, TO A DARKER THAN A LIGHT STRAW COLOR, THE COMPONENT IS TO BE REJECTED.
    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Remove and blend area(s) of damage as necessary.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-35-03-300-501.

        The maximum depth to be removed must not be more than 0.005 in. (0.13 mm).

        The diameter of the area removed is to be 50 times the depth of the damage.

        Make sure the damage marks are fully removed and the area is made smooth to the adjacent material.

      1. Polish the area(s).

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-35-03-300-501.

        Polish the repaired area that has been made smooth.

        Make sure all the scratches are removed and the surface finish is the same as the adjacent material.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-220-152 Examine the Repair

    2. Refer to: Figure and Figure.

      1. Do a visual and dimensional examination.

      2. Make sure the maximum depth of the repaired area is not more than 0.005 in. (0.13 mm).

        Make sure the surface finish is the same as the adjacent material.

        Use workshop inspection equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-110-145 Do a Swab Etch

      1. Chemically clean.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-08-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-08-300-001.

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

      1. Swab etch the repaired area(s).

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-08-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-08-300-002.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-230-071 Do a Local Crack Test

      1. Do a local penetrant crack test on the repaired area(s).

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

        Use penetrant crack test equipment.

        No cracks are permitted.
