General

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC. Only the primary Fig/item numbers are used. For the service bulletin alpha variants refer to the IPC.

Apply the approved penetrating oil:ej281. before the removal of threaded parts and parts with an interference fit. Let the parts soak before removal.

Discard all rubber seal rings, cotter pins and keywashers removed in this procedure.

Refer to TASK 72-50-00-990-501 (DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION-001) for a sectional view of the LP turbine module.

NOTE

Special tools are identified in the procedure by the tool primary number.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-10-030-174 Install the Protector Ring Segments

    1. Refer to: Figure

    2. Install the IAE 1M14119 Protector ring segment 3 off between the stage 4 vanes inner platforms and the stage 3 blades roots.

    2. SUBTASK 72-50-10-030-175 Install the Lifting Shaft in to the Guide Fixture

    1. Refer to: Figure

    2. Install the IAE 1M14056 Lifting shaft 1 off in to the IAE 1M14063 Guide fixture 1 off.

    3. Attach the bushing, part of the lifting shaft, with three head cap screws on to the guide fixture. Tighten the bolts.

    3. SUBTASK 72-50-10-030-176 Install the Tilting Plate on to the Lifting Shaft

    1. Refer to: Figure

    2. Install the IAE 1M14041 Tilting plate 1 off on to the lifting shaft.

    3. Turn the lifting shaft. Lift the tilting plate until the protective rubber, part of the tilting plate, is on the same level as the stage 4 vane honeycombs. Use an applicable wrench.

    4. Carefully fill the bicycle tube, part of the tilting plate, with pressured air.

    4. SUBTASK 72-50-10-030-177 Remove the Shroud Seal Segments of the Stage 4

    1. Refer to: Figure

    2. Loosen the shroud seal segments with the IAE 1M14130 Removal puller 1 off.

    3. Remove all the 31 shroud seal segments from the LP turbine case.

    4. Put the shroud seal segments into a basket.

    5. SUBTASK 72-50-10-030-178 Remove the Stage 4 Rear Heatshields

    1. Refer to: Figure

    2. Remove the stage 4 rear heatshields from the LP turbine case.

    3. Put the rear heatshields in a rack pallet.

    6. SUBTASK 72-50-10-030-179 Prepare the Stage 4 Vane Assembly for Removal

    1. Refer to: Figure

    2. NOTE

      Make sure that the rear hub hooks from all vanes become free from the groove in the turbine case.

      Carefully lower the inner ends of the 30 vane segments. Turn the lifting shaft stepwise down. Use an applicable wrench. Push all 30 vane segments at the inner end down by hand if necessary.

    7. SUBTASK 72-50-10-030-180 Remove the Tilting Plate and the Lifting Shaft

    1. Refer to: Figure

    2. Release the pressure of the bicycle tube on the tilting plate.

    3. Remove the tilting plate.

    4. Loosen and remove the three head cap screws which attach the bushing to the guide fixture.

    5. Install the three head cap screws in to the threaded holes of the bushing.

    6. Remove the lifting shaft from the guide fixture.

    8. SUBTASK 72-50-10-030-181 Install the Lifting Fixture

    1. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    2. Use hoist equipment. Lift the IAE 1M14071 Lifting fixture 1 off above the LP turbine case and rotor.

    3. Carefully lower the lifting fixture on to the stage 4 vane assembly. Turn the lifting fixture to engage the hooks through the vane segments. Each hook must engage through the second and third vane of the vane cluster.

    4. Remove hoist equipment.

    5. CAUTION

      MAKE SURE THAT EACH TAIL OF THE HOOKS IS ATTACHED CORRECTLY TO THE STAGE 4 VANES. IF NOT THE PARTS CAN BE DAMAGED. THE HOOKS CAN BE SEEN THROUGH THE APERTURE OF THE LIFTING FIXTURE.

      Attach the hooks to the second vane airfoil leading edges. Tighten the knurled knobs.

    9. SUBTASK 72-50-10-030-182 Remove the Stage 4 Segment Seals

    1. Refer to: Figure

    2. Remove the four stage 4 segment seals in counter-clockwise direction out of the LP turbine case.

    3. Put the segment seals on a rack pallet.

    10. SUBTASK 72-50-10-030-183 Remove the Stage 4 Vane Assembly

    1. Refer to: Figure

    2. Attach hoist equipment on to the electronic balance crane. Lift the electronic balance crane above the LP turbine case and rotor. Attach the lifting fixture to the electronic balance crane. Use lifting sling.

    3. Hoist the electronic balance crane until the balance scale shows the value of approximately 71.0 lb (32.0 kg) plus the weight of the lifting sling.

    4. CAUTION

      WHILE REMOVAL OF THE STAGE 4 VANE ASSEMBLY MAKE SURE THAT THE BALANCE SCALE KEEPS APPROXIMATELY AT THE SAME POSITION TO PREVENT DAMAGE.

      Compress the ropes of the lifting sling while you disengage the vane assembly from the LP tubine case grooves.

    5. Remove the stage 4 vane assembly carefully with hoist equipment, the electronic balance crane and the installed lifting fixture out of the LP turbine case.

    6. Put the stage 4 vane assembly on to the IAE 1M14070 Mounting plate 1 off. Remove the electronic balance crane from hoist equipment.

    7. Release the holders of the lifting fixture with the hand knobs. Remove the lifting fixture from the stage 4 vane assembly.

    8. Disassemble the stage 4 vane assembly. Put the stage 4 vane segments and the sealing strips in baskets.

    11. SUBTASK 72-50-10-030-184 Remove the Stage 4 Front Heatshield

    1. Refer to: Figure

    2. Remove the four stage 4 front heatshields in counter-clockwise direction out of the turbine case.

    3. Put the front heatshields on a rack pallet.

    12. SUBTASK 72-50-10-030-185 Remove the Protector Ring Segments

    1. Refer to: Figure

    2. Remove the three protector ring segments.

    13. SUBTASK 72-50-10-030-186 Move the Lifting Ring to the Zero Position

    1. Move the lifting ring of the IAE 1M14010 Assembly/Disassembly fixture 1 off in the zero position.
