Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-41-350-059 Clean the LP Turbine Shaft

      1. Clean the part.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-41-330-052 Machine Worn Diameter D1

      NOTE

      If surface has been previously repaired using nickel plate, remove old plating completely.
    2. Refer to: Figure

      1. Grind off damaged diameter to 8.9933 to 8.9816 in. (228.432 to 228.132 mm). Keep material removal to a minimum.

      2. Hold D1 to a minimum value, but any previous coating and damage must be completely removed.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-41-370-051 Stress Relieve the LP Turbine Shaft

      1. Heat treat the part for one hour at 374 to 410 deg F (190 to 210 deg C).

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-05-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-41-240-058 Examine the LP Turbine Shaft for Cracks

      1. Magnetic particle test the part.

      2. Refer to TASK 72-50-41-200-003 (INSPECTION/CHECK-003) SUBTASK 72-50-41-240-052.

      1. Clean the part.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-41-330-053 Prepare the LP Turbine Shaft for Plating

      1. Wire-up the part.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-05-300-503.

      1. Clean the part.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503.

      1. Apply stopping-off compound to areas to be left unplated.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-05-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-41-380-065 Etch the LP Turbine Shaft before Plating

      1. Etch and wash the part using sulphuric acid 69.50 to 80.10 oz/gal (520 to 600 g/l).

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-41-330-054 Nickel Chloride Strike the LP Turbine Shaft

      1. Immediately after etch and washing, nickel chloride strike the part.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-05-300-503.

      1. Wash the part in water.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-05-300-503.

      1. Nickel plate the part using sulphate nickel for sufficient time to achieve the diameter 8.968 in. (227.80 mm) maximum.

      1. Nickel plate the part using sulphate nickel (solution B) for sufficient time to achieve the diameter 8.968 in. (227.80 mm) maximum.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-05-300-003.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-41-370-052 De-Embrittle the LP Turbine Shaft

      1. Give a de-embrittlement treatment as soon as possible after plating. Heat treat the part at 374 to 410 deg F (190 to 210 deg C) for 3 hours.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-05-300-503.

      1. Visually examine the nickel deposit.

      2. Refer to TASK 72-50-41-200-000 (INSPECTION/CHECK-000).

    3. Dimension check the plated area for diameter 8.968 in. (227.80 mm) maximum.

      1. Grind the plated area by normal grinding wheel to specified dimensions.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-05-300-503.

      1. Visually examine the ground area for pitting, flaking and excessive roughness.
