Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-42-320-051 Machine the ID of the No. 5 Bearing Seal Spacer before Nickel Plate

      1. Machine the ID of the seal spacer.

      2. Refer to Figure.

        Machine the diameter to permit a minimum plating thickness of 0.002 in. (0.051 mm) after finish machining.

        Hold to the minimum value.

        If the diameter was plated before, you can strip the plating.

        Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-05-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-42-230-054 Examine the No. 5 Bearing Seal Spacer

      1. Fluorescent penetrant inspect the seal spacer.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

        No cracks are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-42-380-051 Apply a Mask to the No. 5 Bearing Seal Spacer

      1. Apply a mask to the areas of the seal spacer that are not to be plated.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-42-330-051 Nickel Plate the ID of the No. 5 Bearing Seal Spacer

      1. Nickel plate the ID of the seal spacer.

      2. Refer to Figure and the SPM TASK 70-33-06-330-503.

        Apply nickel plate to a sufficient thickness to permit finish machining.

        Plating outside the repair area is permitted but must be removed.

    2. Remove the mask.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-42-110-053 Clean the No. 5 Bearing Seal Spacer

      1. Clean the seal spacer.

      2. Flush the seal spacer with cold water.

        Flush the seal spacer with hot water.

        Dry the seal spacer with air blast.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-42-370-051 Bake after Nickel Plate

      1. Bake the seal spacer after nickel plate.

      2. Put the seal spacer into a furnace at 360 to 390 deg F (182 to 199 deg C) for three hours.

        Do this process as soon as possible in less than four hours after nickel plate.

      1. Machine the ID of the seal spacer after nickel plate.

      2. Refer to Figure.

        Break the edges to 0.003 to 0.015 in. (0.08 to 0.38 mm) after machining.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-42-220-081 Examine the Repair

      1. Examine the seal spacer after nickel plate.

      2. Refer to Figure and TASK 72-50-42-200-000 (INSPECTION/CHECK-000).

        Do a visual inspection of the plated area to examine for cracks and adhesion.

        Use a 4X magnifying glass to examine for cracks.

        The normal network of cracks that is emphasized by grinding is permitted.

        The thickness of the plate after finish machining must be a minimum of 0.002 in. (0.051 mm).
