Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-58-01-320-051 Machine the Mating Seat Diameter of the No. 5 Bearing Cover

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Machine the mating seat diameter.

      2. The mating seat diameter must be 7.1834 to 7.1775in. (182.458 to 182.308 mm) after the removal of the damage.

Remove all damage and wear. Keep the removal of material to the minimum necessary, to remove the damage.

    1. SUBTASK 72-58-01-230-054 Examine the No. 5 Bearing Cover

      1. Do the fluorescent penetrant inspection for cracks.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

Cracks are not permitted. Use FPI inspection station.

    1. SUBTASK 72-58-01-330-051 Nickel Plate the Mating Seat Diameter of the No. 5 Bearing Cover

    2. Refer to: Figure

      1. Mask areas of the cover not to be plated.

      1. Do the nickel plating.

      2. Plate to a sufficient thickness to permit machining to the last dimension. The plating out of the mounting face is permitted, but must be removed. Use process plating tanks.

    3. Remove the mask.

      1. Clean and dry the cover.

      2. Flush with cold water. Flush with hot water.

        Flush with air blast.

    1. SUBTASK 72-58-01-370-051 De-embrittle the Cover

      1. Put the cover into an oven at 349 to 399 deg F (176 to 204 deg C) for 4 hours.

      2. Do this procedure as soon as possible, in less than 4 hours, after the plating.

    1. SUBTASK 72-58-01-220-055 Examine the Cover

      1. Visually examine the plating for finish, cracks and adhesion.

      2. Plating must have a constant colour. Circumferential cracks are not permitted. Rough and blistered areas are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-58-01-320-052 Machine the Mating Seat Diameter of the No. 5 Bearing Cover

    2. Refer to: Figure

      1. Machine the mating seat diameter.

      2. The dimensions must be 7.192 to 7.190in. (182.668 to 182.618 mm).

The perpendicularity of the diameter must be within 0.00197 in. (0.050 mm) in relation to surface A. Clean up the edges of groove. Chamfer where necessary. Use grinding machine.

    1. SUBTASK 72-58-01-220-056 Examine the Nickel Plated Area

    2. Refer to: Figure

      1. Visually examine the plated area for cracks and adhesion.

      2. Use a 5x magnifying glass.

The natural network crack, emphasized by grinding, is permitted.

      1. Measure the thickness of the plating.

      2. Do not accept a thickness of less than 0.0006in. (0.015 mm), after the last machining.

    1. SUBTASK 72-58-01-350-052 Record the Repair

      1. Vibro-engrave VRS5018 adjacent to the part number.
