Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-320-053 Machine the Outer Diameter of the Carbon Seal Housing

    2. Refer to: Figure

      1. Machine the outer diameter.

      2. The outer diameter must be between 5.7895 to 5.7781in. (147.053 to 146.765 mm) after the removal of the damage.

        Remove all damage and wear. Keep the removal of material to the minimum necessary to remove the damage.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-230-055 Examine the Carbon Seal Housing

      1. Do a fluorescent penetrant inspection for cracks.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

        No cracks are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-330-052 Nickel Plate the Outer Diameter of the Carbon Seal Housing

    2. Refer to: Figure

      1. Mask the areas of the housing not to be plated.

      1. Do the nickel plating.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-10-200-502.

        Plate to a sufficient thickness to permit the machining to the last dimensions.

        The plating out of the outer diameter is permitted but must be removed.

    3. Remove the mask.

      1. Clean and dry the housing.

      2. Flush with cold water.

        Flush with hot water.

        Dry with air blast.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-370-052 De-embrittle the Carbon Seal Housing

      1. Put the housing into an oven at 266 to 302 deg F (130 to 150 deg C) for 12 hours.

      2. Do this process as soon as possible in less than 4 hours after the plating.

      1. Do the visual inspection of the plating for finish, cracks and adhesion.

      2. Plating must have a constant color.

        No circumferential cracks are permitted.

        No roughness and blistering are permitted.

      1. Machine the outer diameter.

      2. The outer diameter must be between 5.7907 to 5.7900in. (147.083 to 147.065 mm).

        Chamfer where necessary.

      1. Do the visual inspection of the plated area for cracks and adhesion.

      2. Use a 4x magnifying glass.

        The natural network crack, emphasized by grinding, is permitted.

      1. Measure the thickness of the plating.

      2. Do not accept thickness less than 0.0006in. (0.015 mm) after the last machining.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-350-055 Record the Repair

      1. Vibro engrave VRS5329 adjacent to the part number.

      2. Remove the metal lifted by marking the number.
