Procedures to Make a Temporary Mark |
Scope
To specify the procedure to make temporary marks on parts.
Safety Precautions
General
Marks made on engine parts, assemblies, or weldments must be easily read and must not be easily removed.
Marks must be easily and accurately read with no aid to the eye.
Where there are unusual area or surface limitations, a maximum of 3.5X magnification is permitted to get the necessary readability.
All marks, unless specified differently, must be 0.060 to 0.160 inch (1.52 to 4.06 mm) high. If necessary, because of the dimensions or the shape of the part, the marks are permitted to be 0.016 to 0.500 inch (0.41 to 12.70 mm) high.

CAUTION
CHINA CLAY-TYPE PENCILS (FOR EXAMPLE, CHINAGRAPH PENCILS) MUST NOT BE USED.GRAPHITE-TYPE PENCILS CAN CAUSE CARBON PENETRATION AT HIGH TEMPERATURES AND MUST NOT BE USED. REMOVE ALL MARKS MADE WITH A GRAPHITE PENCIL BEFORE HEAT TREATMENT OR ASSEMBLY.DO NOT USE LEAD OR METALLIC PENCILS OR A PROCEDURE NOT SPECIFIED TO MARK PARTS. PARTICLES OF CARBON, ZINC, COPPER, LEAD, OR A SIMILAR RESIDUE CAN CAUSE A DECREASE IN FATIGUE STRENGTH AS A RESULT OF CARBURIZATION OR INTERGRANULAR ATTACK WHEN THE PART BECOMES HOT. IF A MARKER THAT IS NOT APPROVED IS USED TO MAKE A MARK, THE MARK MUST BE FULLY REMOVED BY THE SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.During the overhaul and repair checks, it will be necessary to mark temporary marks on some components and assemblies.
The symbols are made with an ink as specified in this SUBTASK. This ink does not cause damage to the surface of the part as mechanical methods do.
NOTE
Usually, ink stamping and electrolytic etching, when used as a temporary marking method, can be applied to all surfaces which do not move against other surfaces after assembly.
Ink marking.
Marking Methods.
After inspection, remove this low dust material with the solvent wipe procedure. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.
Chalk.
This material is used to highlight stamped or vibration peened part numbers during inspection, and is approved to use on all gas turbine engine alloys if you remove the material after the inspection is completed.
NOTE
CoMat 02-123 LAY-OUT FLUID is a more permanent material to use on the cool parts of the engine only. For example, use this marker at temperatures less than 536 deg F (280 deg C).
Lay-out Fluid and Marking Ink.
NOTE
When the mark is to be made in water (for example, during ultrasonic inspection check), use CoMat 02-121 TEMPORARY MARKER PENCIL/CRAYON.
CAUTION
CoMat 06-153 FELT TIP MARKER, RAPID DRYING IS DIFFICULT TO REMOVE FROM ALUMINUM ALLOYS. THUS, DO NOT USE THIS MARKER FOR TEMPORARY INSPECTION OR IN-PROCESS MARKING ON ANODIZED OR FINISHED SURFACES OF ALUMINUM ALLOY GAS TURBINE ENGINE PARTS WHEN REMOVAL OF THE MARK WILL OCCUR LATER.NOTE
Refer to the PCI for the different types of base materials and coatings on which the CoMat 06-153 FELT TIP MARKER, RAPID DRYING and its many suffixes can be applied.
Markers
NOTE
This trace element certified pen is now CoMat 06-153 FELT TIP MARKER, RAPID DRYING. It is permitted to use remaining supplies.
Pens.
These materials are approved to use on steel, stainless steel, cobalt-base alloys, cobalt-base alloys, aluminum, titanium, and titanium alloys, and on nickel-base alloys that do not include nickel superalloys (for example, IAE 1422 or IAE 1480) unless specified differently in the PCI.
Marking Materials.
NOTE
Unless specified differently, it is not necessary to remove the subsequent materials.
