WARNING

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO OBTAIN AND OBSERVE THE MANUFACTURER'S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. THESE CONTAIN INFORMATION SUCH AS, HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND CONTROL MEASURES AND ALSO TO TAKE LOCAL REGULATIONS INTO CONSIDERATION.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-11-63-100-001 Removal Procedure

    2. NOTE

It is permitted to do this procedure when the applicable repair procedure in an engine manual calls for it.

Use a manual stainless steel wire brush to remove loose corrosion material from the repair area on the part.

    3. NOTE

The alkaline gel will remove or degrade anodized coatings and chemical conversion coatings on aluminum alloys. The protective masking helps to control the size of the area where repair of the anodized coating or chemical conversion coating will be necessary as a result of this procedure.

Apply protective masking to the surfaces that are adjacent to the repair area to make sure that these surfaces have protection from the alkaline gel and the flush water that flows off the repair area.

      1. CAUTION

IF THE ALKALINE GEL STAYS ON THE PART FOR TOO LONG, THEN TOO MUCH STOCK LOSS CAN OCCUR.

Apply CoMat 01-455 ALKALINE GEL CARBON REMOVER or CoMat 01-456 ALKALINE GEL CARBON REMOVER at ambient temperature with a brush to the repair area.

      2. Let the alkaline gel stay on the repair area for 10 minutes maximum. Apply more alkaline gel with a brush at regular intervals to make sure that the gel does not dry on the part surface during this time.

    4. Flush the repair area fully with cold or hot water.

    5. Blow water off the part with clean filtered air to dry the part.

      1. Do a visual inspection of the pit for remaining corrosion and carbon.

      2. If the corrosion and carbon are fully removed, the surface in the pit will have approximately the same appearance as the adjacent part surface that has no corrosion.

      3. CAUTION

THE MAXIMUM TIME THAT ALKALINE GEL IS PERMITTED TO STAY ON THE ALUMINUM ALLOY PARTS DURING EACH SHOP VISIT IS 20 MINUTES. IF THIS LIMIT IS EXCEEDED TOO MUCH STOCK LOSS CAN OCCUR.

It there is remaining corrosion or carbon in the pit, repeat the cleaning cycle. It is permitted to repeat the cycle until the total alkaline treatment time during the shop visit is 20 minutes.

    6. Remove the protective masking from the part.

    7. Clean the part by the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503 to remove remaining tape adhesive.

    8. Apply chemical conversion coating to the cleaned area after all necessary inspection of the part is completed by the SPM TASK 70-38-02-300-503.
