The nitric acid/hydrofluoric acid solution is used to etch aluminum components prior to the Zincate treatment. The nitric acid/hydrofluoric acid solution must be used in a suitable tank which must have agitation and extraction facilities. A Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastic container lined with PVC is recommended, but the chemical supplier will be able to provide more specific advice.

        1. Basic Composition.

        2. Each 264 gal (1000 l) of nitric acid/hydrofluoric acid solution is made-up from 161 gal (610 l) of CoMat 01-262 NITRIC ACID, or 121.5 gal (460 l) of CoMat 01-263 NITRIC ACID, and 8 gal (30 l) of CoMat 01-199 ACID ADDITION AGENT, or CoMat 01-200 ACID ADDITION AGENT, in CoMat 01-201 DISTILLED, DEIONIZED, DEMINERALIZED, OR REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) WATER.

      1. Make-up of Nitric Acid/Hydrofluoric Acid Solution.

      2. Fill the container to 33 percent of its operating volume with distilled or deionized water.

      3. Slowly stir-in the specified volume of nitric acid.

A Polypropylene, or a PVC lined mild steel, or a suitable container recommended by the chemical supplier. The process tank must be fitted with heating and extraction facilities is required for the process.

      1. Make-up of Zincate solution.

Make-up the CoMat 01-544 ZINCATE SOLUTION, in line with the manufacturer's instructions.

      2. For information only: mix the zincate concentrate thoroughly in the supply container, then add to the partially filled working container. Then fill the working container to its operating volume with deionized water.

      3. For control procedure for Zincate solution refer to SUBTASK 70-33-08-200-007.

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-08-100-005 Nitric Acid Solution (HNO3)

      1. General.

      2. The nitric acid solution is used to remove surface smut or the zincate coating. The nitric acid solution must be used in an acid resistant steel container, or a Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastic container lined with PVC. The tank must be have heating, agitation and extraction facilities.

        1. Basic Composition.

        2. Each 264 gal (1000 l) of nitric acid solution is made up from 211 gal (800 l) of CoMat 01-262 NITRIC ACID, or 158 gal (600 l) of CoMat 01-263 NITRIC ACID, in CoMat 01-201 DISTILLED, DEIONIZED, DEMINERALIZED, OR REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) WATER.

      1. Make-up.

      2. Fill the container to 20 percent of its operating volume with distilled or deionized water.

      3. Stir-in the specified volume of nitric acid, stirring intensely.

      4. Fill the container to its operating volume with distilled or deionized water, then stir to mix.

      5. If necessary, heat the solution.

      1. Testing.

      2. The nitric acid solution must be tested for HN03 content, once a month, as specified in SUBTASK 70-33-08-200-004.
