WARNING

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO OBTAIN AND OBSERVE THE MANUFACTURER'S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIALS INFORMATION SUCH AS, HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND CONTROL MEASURES AND ALSO TO TAKE LOCAL REGULATIONS INTO CONSIDERATION.
THIS PROCEDURE INCLUDES THE USE OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, SODIUM CYANIDE OR POTASSIUM CYANIDE. CYANIDE SALTS AND/OR SOLUTIONS ARE VERY POISONOUS AND WORK VERY QUICKLY. THEY GIVE OFF HYDROCYANIC GAS, WHICH CAN KILL WHEN MIXED WITH ACID. THE PRECAUTIONS THAT FOLLOW MUST ALWAYS BE OBEYED.
CYANIDE SALTS AND SOLUTIONS MUST ALWAYS BE KEPT AWAY FROM ACIDS.
SODIUM HYDROXIDE SOLUTIONS MUST ALWAYS BE KEPT AWAY FROM THE SKIN AND EYES, BECAUSE THEY CAN BURN.

WARNING

OPERATORS MUST ALWAYS USE THE APPROVED PROTECTIVE CLOTHING SUPPLIED.

WARNING

FINGERNAILS MUST BE KEPT SHORT AND MUST ALWAYS BE FULLY CLEANED BEFORE YOU EAT, DRINK, OR SMOKE.

WARNING

ITEMS THAT ARE USED TO EAT OR DRINK WITH MUST NOT BE KEPT AT LOCATIONS WHERE CYANIDE IS KEPT OR USED. ALSO, YOU MUST NOT EAT, DRINK, OR SMOKE AT SUCH LOCATIONS.

WARNING

CYANIDE MUST ALWAYS BE KEPT AT A SAFE LOCATION, WHERE ACCESS IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO APPROVED PERSONS.

WARNING

A SUPPLY OF CYANIDE ANTIDOTE MUST ALWAYS BE EASILY AVAILABLE.

WARNING

THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY THE SAFETY OFFICER MUST ALWAYS BE OBEYED.

WARNING

THE OPERATORS MUST ALWAYS WEAR THE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING SUPPLIED, WHICH INCLUDES RUBBER GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION.

WARNING

IMMEDIATELY REMOVE SOLUTION IN THE EYES. SUFFICIENTLY FLUSH THE EYES WITH WATER TO REMOVE CONTAMINATION. GET MEDICAL AID IMMEDIATELY.

WARNING

A SUPPLY OF BUFFERED PHOSPHATE SOLUTION MUST ALWAYS BE EASILY AVAILABLE, TO APPLY TO BURNS.

WARNING

CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN YOU ADD COMPOUNDS THAT CONTAIN SOLID SODIUM HYDROXIDE TO WATER, BECAUSE HEAT IS GIVEN OUT WHEN THE COMPOUND DISSOLVES. MAKE MUCH MOVEMENT OF THE SOLUTION, WITH AIR OR MECHANICAL METHODS, AS YOU ADD THE COMPOUND TO THE SURFACE OF THE SOLUTION. DO NOT ADD LARGE QUANTITIES OF THE COMPOUND TO ONE SMALL AREA OF THE TANK, BECAUSE THE SOLUTION WILL BOIL.

WARNING

ALL INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY THE SAFETY OFFICER MUST BE OBEYED.

WARNING

THE OPERATORS MUST ALWAYS WEAR THE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING SUPPLIED, WHICH INCLUDES RUBBER GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION.

WARNING

IF ACID SOLUTIONS GET INTO THE EYES, FULLY FLUSH THEM WITH CLEAN WATER, THEN GET MEDICAL AID IMMEDIATELY.

WARNING

EVERY POSSIBLE PRECAUTION MUST BE TAKEN TO KEEP SOLUTIONS AWAY FROM THE EYES AND BARE SKIN. OPERATORS MUST WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING (THIS INCLUDES RUBBER GLOVES AND GOGGLES) WHEN THEY PREPARE AND USE ACID SOLUTIONS. BE SURE TO REGULARLY EXAMINE RUBBER GLOVES FOR PIN HOLES AND REPLACE THE GLOVES, IF NECESSARY.

WARNING

SAFETY NOTICES MUST BE IN A POSITION THAT THE OPERATOR CAN EASILY SEE.

WARNING

EYE-WASH BOTTLES AND HYDROFLUORIC ACID (HF) BURN JELLY MUST BE AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO THE OPERATOR'S WORK AREA.

WARNING

IF CONTAMINTION OF THE SKIN OCCURS, FLUSH THE SKIN WITH A LARGE QUANTITY OF CLEAN WATER.

WARNING

FOR ALL BURNS, HOWEVER SLIGHT, IT IS IMPORTANT TO GET MEDICAL AID IMMEDIATELY.

WARNING

MEDICAL PERSONNEL MUST BE TOLD WHICH SOLUTION (THE ACIDS INVOLVED) HAS CAUSED THE BURN PARTICULARLY IF HYDROFLUORIC ACID IS A CONSTITUENT.

      1. Preparation of Solution Code 55 Soft Nickel Plating Solution (Sulfamate).

        1. Prepare Solution A or Solution B nickel plating solution by these steps:

          1. Solution A.

          2. Fill the tank to approximately 90 percent of the operating volume with CoMat 03-108 SULFAMATE NICKEL PLATING SOLUTION.

          3. Increase the temperature of the solution to 115 to 130 deg F (46 to 54 deg C).

          1. Solution B.

          2. Fill the tank to approximately 50 percent of the operating volume with CoMat 03-131 SULFAMATE NICKEL REPLENISHING SOLUTION.

          3. Slowly and carefully add the necessary amount of CoMat 01-015 BORIC ACID H3BO3, and stir to mix.

          4. Increase the temperature of the solution to 115 to 130 deg F (46 to 54 deg C).

      2. Measure the chloride content of the nickel plating solution (Solution A or Solution B). Refer to Test Method P-100 in the SPM TASK 70-11-47-110-501, SUBTASK 70-11-47-180-033.

      3. Calculate the quantity of nickel chloride that is necessary to bring the chloride to the requirements of Solution Code 55 (0.8 to 1.2 oz.wt/gal (6 to 9.0 g/l) as chloride (Cl)).

      4. Make up sufficient nickel chloride solution, with a nickel chloride content of 30 oz.wt/gal (225 g/l), to bring the chloride content of the plating solution to the requirements of Solution Code 55. Use CoMat 01-557 NICKEL CHLORIDE (SALTS) or CoMat 01-078 NICKEL CHLORIDE SOLUTION.

      5. Increase the temperature of the nickel solution to approximately 115 to 130 deg F (46 to 54 deg C).

        1. Purify the nickel chloride solution.

          NOTE

Solution Code 51 will increase the pH; CoMat 03-130 SULFAMIC ACID will decrease the pH.
        2. Adjust the pH of the nickel chloride solution to 5.0 to 5.5 by the addition of Solution Code 51 Sodium Hydroxide Solution (11 percent). This addition will produce a heavy white precipitate. To help in redissolution of the precipitate, make the additions into the tank overflow.

        3. Add 0.1 fl.oz/gal (0.77 ml/l) of CoMat 01-280 HYDROGEN PEROXIDE H202 to the nickel chloride solution. Use mechanical agitation (such as, a corrosion-resistant stainless steel solution pump, mixer, or up/down lift), to mix the solution.

        4. Add 1 oz.wt/gal (7.5 g/l) of CoMat 01-281 ACTIVATED CARBON to the nickel chloride solution as a slurry in a small quantity of water or nickel plating solution.

        5. Use mechanical agitation to mix the nickel chloride solution for a minimum of 2 hours.

        6. Let the nickel chloride solution sit, without agitation, for a minimum of 12 hours.

        7. Filter the nickel chloride solution into a clean tank; use an auxiliary tank that is not the nickel plating tank.

        8. Replace the filter pads, and then filter the nickel chloride solution into the nickel plating tank that contains the nickel plating solution.

      6. Analyze again the nickel plating solution for chloride and adjust with purified nickel chloride solution, as necessary.

      7. Adjust the pH of the nickel plating with CoMat 03-130 SULFAMIC ACID or Solution Code 51 Sodium Hydroxide Solution (11 percent), as necessary.

        NOTE

For the best results, use of 2 sq ft of dummy cathode area for each 100 gallons of plating solution (490.9 sq.cm of dummy cathode area for each 100l of plating solution).
      8. Electrolytically purify the nickel plating solution for 24 hours minimum each week with a corrugated dummy cathode at an average current density of 3 to 5 amps/sq.ft. (3.23 to 5.38 amps/1000 sq. cm).

      1. Purification of Solution Code 55 Nickel Plating Solution.

      2. Filter the nickel plating solution into a clean auxiliary tank.

      3. Increase the temperature of the nickel plating solution to 115 to 130 deg F (46 to 54 deg C).

      4. Add 5 to 6 lbs of CoMat 01-281 ACTIVATED CARBON, or 9 to 11 lbs of CoMat 01-282 ACTIVATED CARBON (GRANULAR), which can be in nylon bags, for each 100 gal (378.50 l) of nickel plating solution (599 to 719 g of CoMat 01-281 ACTIVATED CARBON or 1.08 to 1.32 kg of CoMat 01-282 ACTIVATED CARBON (GRANULAR) Activated Carbon (Granular) for each 100l of nickel plating solution).

      5. Use mechanical agitation (such as, a corrosion-resistant stainless steel solution pump, mixer, or up/down lift), to mix the nickel plating solution for 3 to 4 hours.

      6. Let the nickel plating solution sit, without agitation, to let the carbon particles fall to the bottom of the tank.

      7. Filter the nickel plating solution into a clean tank until the effluent is clear (not turbid or cloudy); use an auxiliary tank that is not the nickel plating tank.

      8. Replace the filter pads, and then filter the nickel plating solution into the nickel plating tank.

      9. Analyze the nickel plating solution and adjust the solution as necessary.

        NOTE

For the best results, use of 2 sq ft of dummy cathode area for each 100 gallons of plating solution (490.9 sq.cm of dummy cathode area for each 100l of plating solution).
      10. Electrolytically purify the nickel plating solution with corrugated dummy cathodes at 3 to 5 amps/sq.ft (3.23 to 5.38 amps/sq.cm) for 24 hours minimum before use.

        1. Measure the stress of the nickel plating solution with a spiral contractometer one time minimum every three months. Refer to Test Method P-66 in the SPM TASK 70-11-47-110-501, SUBTASK 70-11-47-180-028.

        2. The nickel plate stress in Solution Code 55 nickel plating solution must be 5000 psi (34473.8 kPa) in compression to 15000 psi (103421.4 kPa) in tension.

          1. If necessary, correct the stress of the nickel plating solution by these steps:

            NOTE

To decrease the time necessary to correct the compressive stress condition, it is permitted to decrease the pH of the nickel plating solution to 2.4 with CoMat 03-130 SULFAMIC ACID during the electrolytic treatment, and then increase then pH to the operating range of 3.5 to 4.5 with Solution Code 55 Sodium Hydroxide when the electrolytic treatment is completed.
          2. If tensile stress of the nickel plating solution is too low, or the compressive stress is too high, electrolytically activate the nickel plating solution with corrugated dummy cathodes at the maximum possible amperage possible for a time that is necessary to correct the stress condition of the plate.

            NOTE

This electrolytic activation removes metal contamination (such as, copper, lead, zinc) from the nickel plating solution.
          3. If the tensile strength of Solution Code 55 is too high, electrolytically activate the nickel plating solution with corrugated dummy cathodes at 3 to 5 amps/sq. ft (3.23 to 5.38 amps/1000 sq.cm) for 24 hours minimum.

        1. Put clean 4 inch (101.6 mm) and 7 inch (177.8 mm) diameter rings (made of approximately 1/16 inch (1.587 mm) diameter stainless steel wire) fully into a calm area of the bath (that is, where there is little or no movement of the solution), and then remove the rings carefully in a horizontal position.

        2. A solution film must stay across the 4 inch (101.6 mm) ring a minimum of 75 percent of the times tried.

          NOTE

You can use a 5 inch (127 mm) and 6 inch (152.4 mm) rings (made of approximately 1/16 inch (1.587 mm) diameter stainless steel wire) to get intermediate measures of concentration.
        3. The solution film on the 7 inch (177.8 mm) ring must break a minimum of 75 percent of the times tried.

        1. If a solution film holds on the 4 inch (101.6 mm) ring less than 75 percent of the time, do these steps:

        2. Add CoMat 01-279 SULFAMATE NICKEL ANTI-PIT-AGENT(LIQUID) to the nickel plating solution in the ratio of 2 fl.oz of CoMat 01-279 SULFAMATE NICKEL ANTI-PIT-AGENT(LIQUID) to 100 gal of plating solution (156 ml of CoMat 01-279 SULFAMATE NICKEL ANTI-PIT-AGENT(LIQUID) to 1000l of plating solution).

        3. Let the nickel plating solution mix for at least 2 hours.

        4. Do a check of the concentration again with a 4 inch (101.6 mm) ring.

        5. If a solution film still does not hold across the 4 inch (101.6 mm) ring a minimum of 75 percent of the times tried, do the procedure again.

        1. If a solution film holds across the 7 inch (177.8 mm) ring 25 percent, or more, of the times tried, use carbon treatment to decrease the amount of antipit wetting agent in the solution by one of these procedures:

          1. Industrial-type filter system procedure.

          2. Replace the filter papers in the industrial-type filter systems with bagged CoMat 01-282 ACTIVATED CARBON (GRANULAR) in Nylon bags.

          3. Flow the solution through the filter system until you correct the condition.

          4. Replace the carbon after each 8 to 12 hours of operation.

          1. Carbo-clear unit procedure.

          2. Flow the solution through a carbo-clear unit until you correct the condition.

          3. Replace the carbon in the carbo-clear unit after each 8 to 12 hours of operation.
