WARNING
YOU MUST NOT ADD WATER TO CONCENTRATED SULFURIC ACID. SPLATTERING OF ACID WHICH WILL RESULT CAN CAUSE SERIOUS BURNS.Solution Code 30 is made up with 28.0 oz/gal (210.0 g/l) of CoMat 01-077 NICKEL CHLORIDE NiCl2+6H2O with nickel (as metal) operating limits of 6.5 to 25.0 oz/gal (48.8 to 187.5 g/l).
Solution Code 30 is also made up with 37.4 fl oz/gal (291.72 ml/l) of CoMat 01-078 NICKEL CHLORIDE SOLUTION and 420 ml/gal (111 ml/l) of CoMat 01-099 HYDROCHLORIC ACID with operating limits of 330 to 510 ml/gal (87.20 to 134.70 ml/l).
Slowly and carefully add the necessary quantity of CoMat 01-077 NICKEL CHLORIDE NiCl2+6H2O or CoMat 01-078 NICKEL CHLORIDE SOLUTION.
Filter the solution if it is made up with CoMat 01-077 NICKEL CHLORIDE NiCl2+6H2O.
Slowly and carefully add the necessary quantity of CoMat 01-099 HYDROCHLORIC ACID.
Stir to mix.
NOTE
If the solution was made up with CoMat 01-078 NICKEL CHLORIDE SOLUTION, this step can be ignored.
The procedure to make up the solution is given below.
Add 3 to 5 lb (1.36 to 2.27 Kg) of CoMat 01-281 ACTIVATED CARBON for every 100 gal (378.50 l) of solution.
Analyze the strike solution and make the necessary adjustments.
NOTE
Good dummy results are obtained by the use of 2 sq ft (1858.06 sq cm) of dummy cathode area for every 100 gal (378.50 l) of plating solution.
A 20 in (508 mm) long dummy cathode has 2.80 sq ft (0.26 sq m) surface area.
A 48 in (1219 mm) long dummy cathode has 6.80 sq ft (0.63 sq m) surface area.
If Solution Code 30 has organic contamination, the Hull Cell panel must show full coverage of nickel plate on the front side when processed at 3 A for 5 minutes in the solution being tested. In the range of 0 to 6 ASF, coverage is good but not necessary. A solution that does not meet this must be carbon treated as follows:
Solution maintanance.
NOTE
You can initially omit this procedure if the solution was made up with CoMat 01-078 NICKEL CHLORIDE SOLUTION. Refer to Step 6.B.

Material Requirements.
Fill the tank to approximately 90 percent of the operating volume with CoMat 03-108 SULFAMATE NICKEL PLATING SOLUTION.
Solution A.
Fill the tank to approximately 50 percent of the operating volume with CoMat 03-131 SULFAMATE NICKEL REPLENISHING SOLUTION.
Slowly and carefully add the necessary amount of CoMat 01-015 BORIC ACID H3BO3, and stir to mix.
Solution B.
Prepare Solution A or Solution B nickel plating solution by these steps:
Measure the chloride content of the nickel plating solution (Solution A or Solution B). Refer to Test Method P-100 in the SPM TASK 70-11-47-110-501, SUBTASK 70-11-47-180-033.
Make up sufficient nickel chloride solution, with a nickel chloride content of 30 oz.wt/gal (225 g/l), to bring the chloride content of the plating solution to the requirements of Solution Code 55. Use CoMat 01-557 NICKEL CHLORIDE (SALTS) or CoMat 01-078 NICKEL CHLORIDE SOLUTION.
Add 0.1 fl.oz/gal (0.77 ml/l) of CoMat 01-280 HYDROGEN PEROXIDE H202 to the nickel chloride solution. Use mechanical agitation (such as, a corrosion-resistant stainless steel solution pump, mixer, or up/down lift), to mix the solution.
Add 1 oz.wt/gal (7.5 g/l) of CoMat 01-281 ACTIVATED CARBON to the nickel chloride solution as a slurry in a small quantity of water or nickel plating solution.
Purify the nickel chloride solution.
NOTE
Solution Code 51 will increase the pH; CoMat 03-130 SULFAMIC ACID will decrease the pH.Adjust the pH of the nickel plating with CoMat 03-130 SULFAMIC ACID or Solution Code 51 Sodium Hydroxide Solution (11 percent), as necessary.
NOTE
For the best results, use of 2 sq ft of dummy cathode area for each 100 gallons of plating solution (490.9 sq.cm of dummy cathode area for each 100l of plating solution).
Preparation of Solution Code 55 Soft Nickel Plating Solution (Sulfamate).
Add 5 to 6 lbs of CoMat 01-281 ACTIVATED CARBON, or 9 to 11 lbs of CoMat 01-282 ACTIVATED CARBON (GRANULAR), which can be in nylon bags, for each 100 gal (378.50 l) of nickel plating solution (599 to 719 g of CoMat 01-281 ACTIVATED CARBON or 1.08 to 1.32 kg of CoMat 01-282 ACTIVATED CARBON (GRANULAR) Activated Carbon (Granular) for each 100l of nickel plating solution).
If tensile stress of the nickel plating solution is too low, or the compressive stress is too high, electrolytically activate the nickel plating solution with corrugated dummy cathodes at the maximum possible amperage possible for a time that is necessary to correct the stress condition of the plate.
NOTE
This electrolytic activation removes metal contamination (such as, copper, lead, zinc) from the nickel plating solution.
If necessary, correct the stress of the nickel plating solution by these steps:
NOTE
To decrease the time necessary to correct the compressive stress condition, it is permitted to decrease the pH of the nickel plating solution to 2.4 with CoMat 03-130 SULFAMIC ACID during the electrolytic treatment, and then increase then pH to the operating range of 3.5 to 4.5 with Solution Code 55 Sodium Hydroxide when the electrolytic treatment is completed.
Measure the stress of the nickel plating solution with a spiral contractometer one time minimum every three months. Refer to Test Method P-66 in the SPM TASK 70-11-47-110-501, SUBTASK 70-11-47-180-028.
Purification of Solution Code 55 Nickel Plating Solution.
Put clean 4 inch (101.6 mm) and 7 inch (177.8 mm) diameter rings (made of approximately 1/16 inch (1.587 mm) diameter stainless steel wire) fully into a calm area of the bath (that is, where there is little or no movement of the solution), and then remove the rings carefully in a horizontal position.
Add CoMat 01-279 SULFAMATE NICKEL ANTI-PIT-AGENT(LIQUID) to the nickel plating solution in the ratio of 2 fl.oz of CoMat 01-279 SULFAMATE NICKEL ANTI-PIT-AGENT(LIQUID) to 100 gal of plating solution (156 ml of CoMat 01-279 SULFAMATE NICKEL ANTI-PIT-AGENT(LIQUID) to 1000l of plating solution).
If a solution film holds on the 4 inch (101.6 mm) ring less than 75 percent of the time, do these steps:
Replace the filter papers in the industrial-type filter systems with bagged CoMat 01-282 ACTIVATED CARBON (GRANULAR) in Nylon bags.
Industrial-type filter system procedure.
If a solution film holds across the 7 inch (177.8 mm) ring 25 percent, or more, of the times tried, use carbon treatment to decrease the amount of antipit wetting agent in the solution by one of these procedures:
Keep the CoMat 01-279 SULFAMATE NICKEL ANTI-PIT-AGENT(LIQUID) by these steps:
