Procedure
Refer to the applicable subtask for the consumable materials that are necessary to do the solution make-up and maintenance for the specified Solution Code. To identify the consumable materials, refer to the V2500 Consumable Materials Index (Publications Ref. PCI-V2500 1IA).
SUBTASK 70-11-48-110-000 Equipment and Material

WARNING
USE EXTREME CARE WHEN YOU ADD SODIUM HYDROXIDE BECAUSE AS THE CONCENTRATION IS INCREASED, CONSIDERABLE HEAT IS GIVEN OFF.Slowly and carefully, while you stir, add the necessary quantity of the sodium hydroxide flakes or the liquid sodium hydroxide.
NOTE
The potassium permanganate will dissolve more easily when the temperature of the solution is in this range.
Make-up of the solution.
To do the maintenance of the solution, refer to SPM TASK 70-11-47-110-501, SUBTASK 70-11-47-170-012, SUBTASK 70-11-47-180-025 (P-55 Test Method).

SUBTASK 70-11-48-110-004 Solution Code 4 - Alkali Cleaner (General Purpose) Solution
Concentration of the solution.
This is an aqueous solution at a concentration of 5 lbs/gal (600 g/l) of CoMat 05-022 ALUMINUM OXIDE ABRASIVE (240-grit) or CoMat 05-198 ALUMINUM OXIDE, 320-GRIT (320-grit) and 4 oz.wt of CoMat 01-207 ANTISOLIDIFYING COMPOUND to 50 lbs. of abrasive(5 g of anti-solidifying compound for each one kg of abrasive) and 15 ml/gal (4 ml/l) of one of the corrosion inhibitors in Table.
With the pump on, slowly add the necessary quantity of CoMat 05-022 ALUMINUM OXIDE ABRASIVE (240 grit) or CoMat 05-198 ALUMINUM OXIDE, 320-GRIT (320-grit).
Make-up of the solution.
The corrosion inhibitor is optional if the blasting equipment is made of stainless steel.
Keep the abrasive content of the slurry at approximately 30 to 40 percent by volume. Add three milliliters of corrosion inhibitor for each pound of abrasive added (or, 6.6 ml of corrosion inhibitor for each one kg of abrasive). Add 0.5 oz of anti-solidifying compound for each six pounds of abrasive added (5.2 g of anti-solidifying compound for each one kg of added abrasive).

General.
Fill the tank with clean cold water to 98 percent of its operating volume; then fill the remaining volume of the tank with the watersoluble corrosion inhibitor.
NOTE
This solution can be made up in a spray container for local application. It is necessary to shake the container before you apply the solution.
CAUTION
IF YOU USE AIR AGITATION FOR MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES, THE CHEMISTRY OF THE SOLUTION CAN CHANGE AND CAUSE THE SOLUTION PERFORMANCE TO BE UNSATISFACTORY.Mix by mechanical agitation or air agitation for five minutes maximum. Do not continue to use air agitation after completion of the make-up of the solution.

WARNING
CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN YOU ADD COMPOUNDS THAT CONTAIN SOLID SODIUM HYDROXIDE TO WATER, BECAUSE HEAT IS GIVEN OUT WHEN THE COMPOUND DISSOLVES. WHILE YOU ADD THE COMPOUND TO THE SOLUTION, THERE MUST BE STRONG MOVEMENT OF THE SOLUTION TO PREVENT HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF THE COMPOUND IN SMALL AREAS OF THE TANK, WHICH CAN CAUSE THE SOLUTION TO BOIL.As you agitate the solution, slowly and carefully add the necessary quantity of CoMat 01-130A POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE KOH. Stir to dissolve.
Add the remaining quantity of water. Stir to mix.
