Safety Requirements

WARNING

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO OBTAIN AND OBSERVE THE CONSUMABLE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIAL SAFETY INFORMATION (SUCH AS, HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE HAZARD DATA, EXPLOSION HAZARD DATA, REACTIVITY HAZARD DATA, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND CONTROL MEASURES). AND ALSO TO TAKE LOCAL REGULATIONS INTO CONSIDERATION.

WARNING

CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN YOU ADD COMPOUNDS THAT CONTAIN SOLID SODIUM HYDROXIDE TO WATER, BECAUSE HEAT IS GIVEN OUT WHEN THE COMPOUND DISSOLVES. WHILE YOU ADD THE COMPOUND TO THE SOLUTION, THERE MUST BE STRONG MOVEMENT OF THE SOLUTION TO PREVENT HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF THE COMPOUND IN SMALL AREAS OF THE TANK, WHICH CAN CAUSE THE SOLUTION TO BOIL.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-11-48-110-000 Equipment and Material

    2. Standard equipment - none

    3. Refer to the applicable subtask for the consumable materials that are necessary to do the solution make-up and maintenance for the specified Solution Code. To identify the consumable materials, refer to the V2500 Consumable Materials Index (Publications Ref. PCI-V2500 1IA).

    1. SUBTASK 70-11-48-110-001 Solution Code 1 - Caustic Potassium Permanganate Descaling Solution

      1. Composition of the solution.

        1. Use Solution Code 1A or Solution Code 1B:

      1. Make-up of the solution.

      2. Fill the tank with clean cold water to 50 percent of the operating level.

      3. WARNING

USE EXTREME CARE WHEN YOU ADD SODIUM HYDROXIDE BECAUSE AS THE CONCENTRATION IS INCREASED, CONSIDERABLE HEAT IS GIVEN OFF.

Slowly and carefully, while you stir, add the necessary quantity of the sodium hydroxide flakes or the liquid sodium hydroxide.

        NOTE

The potassium permanganate will dissolve more easily when the temperature of the solution is in this range.
      4. If necessary, increase the temperature of the solution to 130 deg F to 150 deg F (54 deg C to 60 deg C) and then add the necessary quantity of the potassium permanganate.

      5. Fill the tank to 100 percent of the operating level with water and increase the temperature of the solution to the temperature specified in the cleaning procedure, and stir to mix.

      1. Solution maintenance.

      2. To do the maintenance of the solution, refer to SPM TASK 70-11-47-110-501, SUBTASK 70-11-47-170-012, SUBTASK 70-11-47-180-025 (P-55 Test Method).

      1. Make-up of the solution.

      2. Fill the tank with water to approximately 75 percent of the operating level.

      3. With the pump on, slowly add the necessary quantity of CoMat 05-022 ALUMINUM OXIDE ABRASIVE (240 grit) or CoMat 05-198 ALUMINUM OXIDE, 320-GRIT (320-grit).

        1. Add the necessary quantities of anti-solidifying compound and corrosion inhibitor.

        2. The corrosion inhibitor is optional if the blasting equipment is made of stainless steel.

      4. Fill the tank with water to 100 percent of the operating level.

      5. Let the slurry mix freely for two to three minutes before you operate the machine.

      1. Slurry maintenance.

        1. After each four hours that the machine operates, examine the abrasive content of the solution as follows:

        2. Fill a 100 ml or 500 ml graduated cylinder with a sample of slurry as it leaves the gun.

        3. The slurry must sit to let the media settle to the bottom of the graduated cylinder.

        4. Keep a record of the results in a department log book before the next periodic check.

        1. Keep the abrasive content of the slurry at approximately 30 to 40 percent by volume. Add three milliliters of corrosion inhibitor for each pound of abrasive added (or, 6.6 ml of corrosion inhibitor for each one kg of abrasive). Add 0.5 oz of anti-solidifying compound for each six pounds of abrasive added (5.2 g of anti-solidifying compound for each one kg of added abrasive).

        2. The corrosion inhibitor is optional if the blasting equipment is made of stainless steel.

        NOTE

It is necessary to start the compressor wash in one hour or less after the make-up of the solution is completed.
        1. Prepare 20 to 30 US gallons of wash fluid.

        2. For compressor washing fluids that composition of the solution above specifies to use at 100 percent by volume, fill the applicable gaspath/compressor cleaning cart with the necessary volume of compressor washing fluid.

        3. For compressor washing fluids that composition of the solution above specifies to mix with potable water, mix the necessary volumes of compressor washing fluid and potable water in the applicable gaspath/compressor cleaning cart. Refer to the Potable Water Quality Specifications in SPM TASK 70-10-00-100-501.

      2. If the ambient temperature is below 40 deg F (4.4 deg C), it is permitted to mix the solution with CoMat 01-124 ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL to prevent icing in accordance with the Engine Manual or Aircraft Maintenance Manual instructions.

      3. Use the solution at ambient temperature unless the compressor washing fluid manufacturer's instructions specify differently.
