Safety Requirements

WARNING

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO OBTAIN AND OBSERVE THE MANUFACTURER'S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIALS, THESE CONTAIN INFORMATION SUCH AS, HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND CONTROL MEASURES AND ALSO TO TAKE LOCAL REGULATIONS IN TO CONSIDERATION.

WARNING

SAFETY NOTICES MUST BE PLACED IN A CONSPICUOUS PLACE.

WARNING

EVERY POSSIBLE CARE MUST BE TAKEN TO AVOID THE SOLUTION COMING INTO CONTACT WITH THE EYES OR BARE SKIN. PROTECTIVE CLOTHING INCLUDING RUBBER GLOVES AND GOGGLES MUST BE PROVIDED FOR THE OPERATORS WHEN PREPARING AND USING THE NITRIC ACID SOLUTION. RUBBER GLOVES SHOULD BE CHECKED REGULARLY FOR PIN HOLES AND REPLACED IF NECESSARY.

WARNING

EYE-WASH BOTTLES AND HF BURN JELLY MUST BE PROVIDED AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO THE PLACE OF WORK.

WARNING

IF SKIN BECOMES CONTAMINATED WITH THE SOLUTION IT MUST BE RINSED WITH COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF CLEAN RUNNING WATER.

WARNING

ALL BURNS, HOWEVER SLIGHT, SHOULD BE TREATED AT THE NEAREST SURGERY OR FIRST AID POST.

WARNING

THE SURGERY MUST BE TOLD WHICH SOLUTION (THE ACIDS INVOLVED) HAS CAUSED THE BURN.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-08-200-001 Cleaning Solution

    2. Subtask deleted - was testing of primary cleaner CoMat 01-071 PRIMARY CLEANER.

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-08-200-002 Cleaning Solution

    2. Subtask deleted - was testing of Comat 01-259.

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-08-200-003 Nitric Acid/Hydrofluoric Acid Solution

      1. Testing the solution (refer to SUBTASK 70-33-08-100-003 for the initial make-up):

      2. Once a month test the solution HN03 content. Test the solution in accordance with the Acid Addition Agent manufacturer's instructions, or alternatively test in accordance with SUBTASK 70-33-89-200-001. It must have a concentration in the limits of 50 to 55 oz/gal (375 to 425 g/l).

      3. Once a month test the solution HF content. Test the solution in accordance with the Acid Addition Agent manufacturer's instructions, or alternatively test in accordance with the SPM TASK 70-11-47-110-501, SUBTASK 70-11-47-180-023. It must have a concentration in the limits of 4 to 6 g/l.

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-08-200-004 Nitric Acid Solution

      1. Testing the solution (refer to SUBTASK 70-33-08-100-005 for initial make-up):

      2. Once a month test the solution HN03 content. Test the solution in accordance with SUBTASK 70-33-89-200-001. It must have a concentration in the limits of 69.4 to 77.5 oz/gal (520 to 580 g/l).

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-08-200-005 Electroless Nickel Plating Solution (Solution Code 85)

    2. Subtask deleted - was Solution Code 85 which is no longer used.

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-08-200-006 Control of the Electroless Nickel Plating Solution

      1. Before and during operation, test the solution Nickel content of the solution. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to do this test. Adjust the solution as required in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

      2. All manufacturer's use slightly different formulations. Typically the nickel content should be approximately 0.68 oz/gal to 0.86 oz/gal (5.0 to 6.4 /l), see SUBTASK 70-33-08-100-010 for a selection of typical operating parameters. Note, the manufacturer's data takes precedence over this guidance note.

      1. Before and during operation, test the solution hydrogen-ion concentration. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to do this test. Adjust the solution as required in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

      2. Typically the hydrogen-ion concentration (or pH) will be in the limits of pH 4.7 to 5.1, although the actual requirement may vary between individual manufacturer's formulations. Note, the manufacturer's data takes precedence over this guidance note.

    2. For initial make-up instructions for Solution Code 86 refer to SUBTASK 70-33-08-100-007; for Solution Code 155 refer to SUBTASK 70-33-08-100-008; and all other solutions refer to SUBTASK 70-33-08-100-009.

      1. Quality inspection samples (refer to SUBTASK 70-33-08-100-007):

        NOTE

The taking and inspection of samples must be carried-out according to the instructions of the chemical laboratory.
      2. Every three months inspect the nickel layer for appearance, bond and resistance to corrosion.

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-08-200-007 Control of the Zincate Solution

      1. Test the solution and adjust the solution as required in accordance with the manufacturer's instruction.

      2. Guidance note: generally, the concentration of the Zincate solution is not critical, see SUBTASK 70-33-08-100-010 for a selection of typical operating parameters. One of the simplest forms of control is by observing the gassing; as the solution becomes depleted there is a noticeable increase in gassing.
