THESE CONTAIN INFORMATION SUCH AS, HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND CONTROL MEASURES AND ALSO TO TAKE LOCAL REGULATIONS INTO CONSIDERATION.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-25-300-001 Electroless Nickel Plate Titanium Alloys

    2. Alkali clean the parts in Solution Code 47, or Solution Code 48, or Solution Code 156, at 110 to 130 deg F (43 to 54 deg C) for 90 to 150 seconds.

    3. Flush the parts in clean water at room temperature for 12 to 30 seconds.

    4. CAUTION

DO NOT USE THE NITRIC ACID SOLUTION THAT FOLLOWS, FOR OTHER PROCEDURES.

Put the parts fully into Solution Code 28 at room temperature until the coating is removed and the bubbles stop.

    5. Flush the parts immediately in clean water at room temperature for 12 to 30 seconds.

    6. NOTE

      This step is optional.

Make the parts neutral in Solution Code 47, or Solution Code 48, or Solution Code 156, at room temperature 30 to 90 seconds.

    7. NOTE

      This step is also optional.

Flush the parts in clean water at room temperature for 12 to 30 seconds.

    8. NOTE

      This step is also optional.

Flush the parts in hot water at 150 to 185 deg F (66 to 85 deg C) for 30 seconds.

    9. Dry the parts with compressed air.

    10. Alkali clean the parts in Solution Code 47, or Solution Code 48, or Solution Code 156, at 110 to 130 deg F (43 to 54 deg C) for 90 to 150 seconds.

    11. NOTE

      This step is optional.

Flush the parts in clean water at room temperature for 12 to 30 seconds if you alkali cleaned the parts.

    12. Put the parts fully in a chemical pickling solution; use Solution Code 33 or Solution Code 150 or Solution Code 151 at room temperature. The amount of time necessary to remove 0.00005 to 0.00010 inch (0.00127 to 0.00254 mm) must be established by stock loss testing of the selected solution.

    13. Flush the parts immediately with clean water at room temperature for 12 to 30 seconds.

      1. Be sure the matte finish is smooth: 0.0002 inch (0.0051 mm) removal/surface (that is, 0.0004 inch (0.010 mm) across the vane stem diameter).

      2. If the surface is not acceptable, do the above pickling and flushing steps again (one more time only).

      3. If the surface is acceptable, go to step O.

    14. Abrasive blast the areas to be plated, as necessary. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-12-08-300-503 or TASK 70-12-11-300-503 or SPM TASK 70-12-06-120-501.

    15. CAUTION

KEEP THE PARTS IN THE DISTILLED OR DEIONIZED WATER UNTIL YOU START STEP Q., WHICH MUST BE STARTED IN LESS THAN ONE HOUR AFTER STEP P. IF YOU DO NOT START WITHIN ONE HOUR, YOU MUST DO STEPS O. AND P. AGAIN.

      CAUTION

KEEP THE PARTS WET IN STEP P. AND ALL SUBSEQUENT STEPS. DO NOT PERMIT THE PARTS TO DRY.

Put the parts fully into CoMat 01-201 DISTILLED, DEIONIZED, DEMINERALIZED, OR REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) WATER at room temperature, immediately after abrasive blasting. Examine the blast areas for an even matte finish.

      1. Put the parts fully into one of the acid solutions that follow:

      2. CAUTION

IF YOU DO NOT START THIS STEP WITHIN ONE HOUR AFTER YOU DO THE ABOVE STEP, YOU MUST ABRASIVE BLAST AND THEN PUT THE PARTS IN DISTILLED OR DEIONIZED WATER AGAIN.

        NOTE

If the bubble do not start in three minutes, discard the old solution and make up a new solution.

Put the parts fully into Solution Code 82, at room temperature, for three minutes after the bubbles start.

      3. NOTE

If the bubbles do not start within 5 seconds after you put the parts in Solution Code 152, discard the old solution and make up a new solution.

Put the parts fully into Solution Code 152, at room temperature, for 12 to 30 seconds.

    16. Flush the parts immediately in CoMat 01-201 DISTILLED, DEIONIZED, DEMINERALIZED, OR REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) WATER at room temperature for 12 to 18 seconds.

    17. CAUTION

DO STEP S. IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT PERMIT THE PARTS TO DRY.

      NOTE

Keep the pH of Solution Code 83 between 7.5 and 9.0 with sodium hydroxide (CoMat 01-008 SODIUM HYDROXIDE NaOH (CAUSTIC SODA), SOLID) or tartaric acid (CoMat 01-087 TARTARIC ACID CRYSTALS).

Put the parts fully into Solution Code 83, at room temperature, for 30 to 60 seconds.

    18. NOTE

      Use a current of 19 to 22 amperes/square foot.

      NOTE

Always turn off the current, when the parts go in or out of the solution.

Put the parts fully into Solution Code 84, at 115 to 125 deg F (46 to 52 deg C), for 12 to 18 seconds.

    19. CAUTION

DO NOT PERMIT THE PARTS TO DRY.

Flush the parts in CoMat 01-201 DISTILLED, DEIONIZED, DEMINERALIZED, OR REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) WATER, at room temperature, for 12 to 18 seconds.

    20. NOTE

To control the time necessary for a given thickness, plate test panels with the parts. Then, at different intervals of time during the plating process, remove a test panel from the solution and measure the plate thickness on the panels. The thickness rate will then be controlled by such conditions as movement, solution, and temperature.

      NOTE

For the usual solution, used with the usual conditions, the thickness rate will be approximately 0.0005 in./hour (0.0127 mm/hour) at 190 deg F (88 deg C).

      NOTE

If necessary, make cathodic and apply one volt to operate. Turn off the current, when the parts start to bubble.

Put the parts fully into Solution Code 86, or Solution Code 155 at 180 to 205 deg F (82 to 96 deg C), or into Solution Code 87 at 180 to 190 deg F (82 to 85 deg C), for the necessary time.

    21. Flush the parts in clean water at room temperature for 12 to 30 seconds.

    22. Flush the parts in hot water at 150 to 185 deg F (66 to 85 deg C) for 30 seconds.

    23. Dry the parts with compressed air.

    24. Remove the maskant from the parts.

    25. Examine the parts, as necessary, for a smooth finish.

    26. Bake the plated parts, in air or CoMat 03-010 ARGON GAS or in CoMat 03-468 NITROGEN, at 725 to 775 deg F (385 to 413 deg C) for one hour.
