TASK 70-33-79-300-503 Stripping Of Plasma And Flame Plate Coatings

General

This TASK gives the procedure for the stripping of plasma and flame coatings.

This procedure for the stripping of plasma and flame sprayed parts can be used on IAE control No.70-38-09 aluminized parts.

This procedure can stress-relieve parts that have been bead peened or shotpeened. Any parts with these surfaces must be bead peened or shotpeened again after stripping. This is to put the fatigue strength levels to their initial level.

NOTE

To identify the consumable materials refer to the PCI.

WARNING

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO OBTAIN AND OBSERVE THE MANUFACTURERS MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIALS INFORMATION SUCH AS, HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND CONTROL MEASURES AND ALSO TO TAKE LOCAL REGULATIONS INTO CONSIDERATION.

WARNING

THE SALTS USED IN THIS PROCEDURE ARE A STRONG CAUSTIC MATERIAL. AVOID SKIN AND EYE CONTACT. FACE MASK, GLOVES AND LONG SLEEVES MUST BE WORN WHEN YOU REMOVE PARTS FROM THE MOLTEN SALT BATH.

WARNING

YOU MUST USE THE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING SUPPLIED, TOGETHER WITH RUBBER GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION.
SOLUTION IN THE EYES MUST BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY. CLEAN THE EYES WITH WATER, SUFFICIENT TO REMOVE THE CONTAMINATION. GO FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT IMMEDIATELY.
A SUPPLY OF BUFFERED PHOSPHATE SOLUTION MUST ALWAYS BE EASILY AVAILABLE, TO APPLY TO BURNS.
CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN YOU ADD COMPOUNDS WHICH CONTAIN SOLID SODIUM HYDROXIDE TO WATER, BECAUSE HEAT IS GIVEN OUT WHEN THE COMPOUND DISSOLVES. MAKE MUCH MOVEMENT OF THE SOLUTION, WITH AIR OR MECHANICAL METHODS, AS YOU ADD THE COMPOUND TO THE SURFACE OF THE SOLUTION. DO NOT ADD LARGE QUANTITIES OF THE COMPOUND, TO ONE SMALL AREA OF THE TANK, BECAUSE THE SOLUTION WILL BOIL.
THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY THE SAFETY OFFICER MUST ALWAYS BE OBEYED.

CAUTION

DO NOT USE THIS PROCEDURE ON PARTS WITH RESISTANCE WELDS.

CAUTION

DO NOT USE THIS PROCEDURE ON PARTS IN WHICH THE MOLTEN SALT SOLUTION CAN GET CAUGHT.

CAUTION

DO NOT USE THIS PROCEDURE ON PARTS MADE OF ALUMINIUM OR COPPER.

CAUTION

DO NOT USE THIS PROCEDURE ON SILVER OR COPPER BRAZED PARTS.

CAUTION

DO NOT USE THIS PROCEDURE ON PARTS THAT HAVE BEEN ELECTROPLATED, EXCEPT FOR PARTS THAT ARE NICKEL PLATED ALL OVER.

CAUTION

DO NOT USE THIS PROCEDURE ON PARTS THAT HAVE BEEN CAST (ESPECIALLY TURBINE VANES), EXCEPT WHERE PERMITTED BY SPECIFIC REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-79-300-001 Clean the Part

    2. Degrease the part. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-79-300-002 Remove the Plasma or Flame Plate Coating

      NOTE

The rack must be made of heat and corrosion resistant material.
    2. Put the part or parts on to an applicable baskets or fixtures made of heat and corrosion resistant material.

    3. Make sure that all the parts and fixtures or baskets are fully dry. If necessary, they can be heated to remove any moisture. Also make sure that the parts and baskets or fixtures do not have organic material on them.

    4. CAUTION

THE PARTS MUST NOT STAY IN THE MOLTEN SALT BATH FOR MORE THAN 30 MINUTES.

Put the parts fully in to the molten salt bath (Solution Code 38) at 775-825 deg F (413 to 441 deg C). (Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-79-100-501 SUBTASK 70-33-79-100-001 for the make-up.).

    5. CAUTION

THE PARTS MUST NOT REMAIN IN THIS CONDITION FOR MORE THAN THREE MINUTES.

Lift the parts out of the molten salt bath (Solution Code 38). Permit enough time for the molten salt to drain away (1 to 3 minutes).

    6. Use cold water to decrease the temperature of the parts to room temperature. This is to be completed in less than two minutes.

    7. Flush the parts. Use a compressed air-water spray at room temperature for 30 to 60 seconds.

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-79-300-003 Examine the Parts

      NOTE

Do not do Step more than 10 times on any parts. If the surface has only been degraded, or small amounts of coating are remaining on the parts, do Step.
    2. Make sure that all of the coating has been removed. If all of the coating has not been removed, do Step again, as necessary.

    3. Dry the part fully with shop air (1 to 3 minutes).

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-79-300-004 Remove Remaining Coating.

      CAUTION

DO NOT GRIT BLAST FOR AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF TIME IN ONE AREA, ESPECIALLY IN THE AREAS WITH NO COATING.
      1. Do one of the procedures that follow, if necessary, to remove any remaining coating.

      2. Abrasive blast. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-12-08-120-001, or SPM TASK 70-12-11-300-503, or SPM TASK 70-12-06-120-001.

      3. CAUTION

WIRE BRUSHES MUST HAVE BRISTLES OF AUSTENITIC CORROSION RESISTANT STEEL.

Brush with tampico or wire brush.

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-79-300-005 Preserve the Parts

    2. Preserve the parts, if necessary. (Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-05-380-501) .
