TASK 70-33-89-300-503 The Procedure To Nitric Acid Clean
General
The procedure to nitric acid clean is usually one of a sequence of steps for the preparation of parts for inspection. These steps are given in the applicable Standard Practice/Process or the Engine Manual for that part.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING INCLUDING RUBBER GLOVES AND GOGGLES MUST BE PROVIDED FOR THE OPERATORS WHEN PREPARING AND USING THE NITRIC ACID SOLUTION. RUBBER GLOVES SHOULD BE CHECKED REGULARLY FOR PIN HOLES AND REPLACED IF NECESSARY.

SAFETY NOTICES MUST BE REPLACED IN A CONSPICUOUS PLACE.
WARNING
EYE-WASH BOTTLES AND HF BURN JELLY MUST BE PROVIDED AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO THE PLACE OF WORK.

IF SKIN BECOMES CONTAMINATED WITH THE SOLUTION IT MUST BE RINSED WITH COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF CLEAN RUNNING WATER.
WARNING
ALL BURNS, HOWEVER SLIGHT, SHOULD BE TREATED AT THE NEAREST SURGERY OR FIRST AID POST.

THE SURGERY MUST BE TOLD WHICH SOLUTION (THE ACIDS INVOLVED) HAS CAUSED THE BURN.
Procedure
Vapor degrease the part as given in the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503, then let the part cool.
SUBTASK 70-33-89-300-001 Vapor Degrease the Part

CAUTION
LOW ALLOY STEELS MUST NOT BE PUT IN TO THE NITRIC ACID SOLUTION.THE NITRIC ACID STRENGTH MUST NOT GO BELOW 30 PERCENT V/V IF FERRITIC STAINLESS STEELS ARE TO BE PUT IN TO THE SOLUTION.PARTS WHICH HAVE NICKEL, ELECTROLESS NICKEL PLATING OR SPRAYED METAL/ABRADABLE COATINGS MUST NOT BE PUT IN TO THE NITRIC ACID SOLUTION, UNLESS NEW PLATINGS OR COATINGS ARE TO BE PUT ON.Put the part fully in to an air agitated stainless steel tank or suitable non-metallic tank which contains nitric acid solution. The nitric acid solution, prepared in SPM TASK 70-33-89-100-501 must be at a temperature of 59 to 77 deg F (15 to 25 deg C). Soak the part for the time given in the applicable Standard Practice/Process or Engine Manual.
