TASK 70-43-03-450-501 Application Of Electrical Contact Enhancer For Wiring Harnesses

General

Electrical contact enhancer on connector contacts in connector interfaces can reduce intermittent false signals and nuisance messages.

This electrical contact enhancer is not an alternative to contact replacement. Worn or damaged connectors must be replaced as soon as the harness is at a location where it is possible to replace the connectors.

For better reliability of connector contacts, it is permitted to apply electrical contact enhancer routinely as part of the usual harness assembly procedure.

Do not apply CoMat 01-578 ELECTRICAL CONTACT ENHANCER or CoMat 01-579 ELECTRICAL CONTACT ENHANCER to igniter high tension lead contacts, EGT harness connections, or EGT junction box connections. During engine operation, the temperatures of these connections can exceed the 425F (218C) decomposition temperature of CoMat 01-578 ELECTRICAL CONTACT ENHANCER or the 550F (288C) decomposition temperature of CoMat 01-579 ELECTRICAL CONTACT ENHANCER.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-35-19-350-001 Procedure

    2. Clean and dry the connectors by SPM TASK 70-11-57-110-501.

      1. Apply the electrical contact enhancer by the applicable procedure:

        1. For CoMat 01-578 ELECTRICAL CONTACT ENHANCER, do the subsequent procedure:

          1. Apply one drop of CoMat 01-578 ELECTRICAL CONTACT ENHANCER to the brush that the manufacturer supplies with the electrical contact enhancer and then use the brush to apply a thin coating of the electrical contact enhancer to the electrical contact pins on the male connector of the mating pair of electrical connectors.

          2. If the ambient temperature is too cold for the electrical contact enhancer to flow sufficiently, add CoMat 01-410 ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL, REAGENT GRADE to the CoMat 01-578 ELECTRICAL CONTACT ENHANCER in a proportion of 4 to 1 maximum (that is, four parts or less isopropyl alcohol to one part electrical contact enhancer) to make the electrical contact enhancer more liquid.

        2. If you have added CoMat 01-410 ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL, REAGENT GRADE to the electrical contact enhancer, let the applied electrical contact enhancer dry for one hour minimum before you connect the mating connectors.

        1. For CoMat 01-579 ELECTRICAL CONTACT ENHANCER, do the subsequent procedure:

          1. CAUTION

IF YOU APPLY TOO MUCH COMAT 01-579 ELECTRICAL CONTACT ENHANCER, PIN-TO-PIN SHORT CIRCUITS CAN OCCUR.

Use the applicable procedure to apply the electrical contact enhancer:

          2. For CoMat 01-579 ELECTRICAL CONTACT ENHANCER bulk liquid, stir to mix the electrical contact enhancer and then use a brush to apply a thin coating of the electrical contact enhancer to the electrical contact pins on the male connector of the mating pair of electrical connectors.

          3. For CoMat 01-579 ELECTRICAL CONTACT ENHANCER aerosol spray, shake the can to mix the contents and then hold the spray can at a distance of 10 - 12 inches (26 - 30 cm) from the connector while lightly spraying to apply a thin coating of electrical contact enhancer to the electrical contact pins on the male connector of the mating pair of electrical connectors.

        2. Let the applied electrical contact enhancer dry before you connect the mating connectors.

    3. Connect the mating connectors. Follow the applicable standard procedures in the Engine Manual to make the connections.
