Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-32-350-051 Remove the Cracks from the Rear Wall Window of the Fan Frame Assembly

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. CAUTION

        WHEELS, STONES AND ABRASIVE PAPERS USED TO DRESS, MAKE SMOOTH OR POLISH A TITANIUM COMPONENT MUST BE OF THE SILICON CARBIDE TYPE. ALUMINUM OXIDE TYPES MUST NOT BE USED.

        CAUTION

        IF MECHANICAL CUTTERS ARE USED, ONLY SMALL CUTS MUST BE MADE TO PREVENT TOO MUCH HEAT.

        Apply the masking tape to the opening port hole of the fan frame and install protective cover.

      1. Scallop to remove cracks. The maximum depth of the scalloping is 0.275 in. (7.0 mm).

      2. Use an abrasive stone and a hand held pneumatic grinder.

        Scalloping must be continued until the crack is removed.

        Remove material to a minimum depth of 0.079 in. (2.0 mm) below the surface of the crack.

    3. Blend the weld bead.

      1. After scalloping is completed, remove all the metal chips from the fan frame by vacuuming.

      2. Use vacuum cleaner.

    4. Remove the masking tape and masking fixture.

      1. CAUTION

        WHEELS, STONES AND ABRASIVE PAPERS USED TO DRESS, MAKE SMOOTH OR POLISH A TITANIUM COMPONENT MUST BE OF THE SILICON CARBIDE TYPE. ALUMINUM OXIDE TYPES MUST NOT BE USED.

        CAUTION

        IF MECHANICAL CUTTERS ARE USED, ONLY SMALL CUTS MUST BE MADE TO PREVENT TOO MUCH HEAT.

        Apply the masking tape to all the opening port hole of the fan frame and install protective cover.

      1. Scribe blending line 0.079 in. (2.00 mm) from the current contour.

      2. Use a pair of dividers.

      1. Remove material corner of the rear wall window from the current contour scribe line.

      2. Use an abrasive stone and a hand held pneumatic grinder.

    3. Make smooth the repaired area.

      1. After preventive repair is completed, remove all the metal chips from the fan frame by vacuuming.

      2. Use a vacuum cleaner.

    4. Remove the masking tape and the protective cover.

    3. Do a visual and dimensional inspection.

      1. Do a penetrant crack test of the repaired area.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-32-350-053 Identify the Repair

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Write the repair number VRS1122 and engine cycles adjacent to the fan frame part number (top portion).

      2. Use vibrating marking pencil.
