Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-60-350-059 Remove the Bearing

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. CAUTION

        DO NOT PERMIT THE CUTTING TOOL TO TOUCH THE LINK. THIS WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE LINK.
        REMOVE ALL STAKING LIP PIECES BEFORE YOU PUSH OUT THE BEARING. THESE MIGHT CASE DAMAGE TO THE LINK BORE.

        Install the rear link in the base.

      1. Cut a groove in the outer race of the bearing and remove the staking lip.

      2. Use cutting tool.

      1. Push out the bearing.

      2. Push on the side where the staking lip has been removed.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-60-220-085 Visually Examine the Rear Link Bearing Bore

    2. Examine the link bore and chamfer.

      1. Remove evident nicks.

      2. Use fine abrasive paper.

      1. Do a penetrant crack test.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

      3. Examine one bore at a time.

      4. Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-60-110-065 Clean the Link and the New Bearing

      1. Clean the link and the bearing.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-60-350-060 Install the New Spherical Bearing

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. CAUTION

        DO NOT TOUCH THE HOT PARTS WITHOUT PROTECTIVE GLOVES.
        HOT PARTS CAN CAUSE REDDENING AND BLISTERING OF THE SKIN IF THE HANDS ARE NOT PROTECTED.
        IMMERSE THE CONTACTED AREA IN COLD WATER FOR 10 MINUTES IF THE SKIN IS BURNED. IMMEDIATELY GET THE MEDICAL ATTENTION IF PAIN OR BLISTERING PERSISTS.

        Increase the temperature of the link.

      2. Use an oven.

        Increase the temperature of the link to 302 deg F (150 deg C).

      1. CAUTION

        INSTALL THE BEARING IN THE LINK BORE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE OR BEARING CANNOT BE INSTALLED CORRECTLY.

        Remove the link from the oven.

      2. Use protective gloves.

      1. Apply the engine oil.

      2. Use a brush to apply a coat of CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS to the link bore suface and to the outside surface of the bearing.

      1. Install the link on the base.

      1. Install the bearing on the guide of the base.

      1. CAUTION

        DO NOT PRESS ON THE BALL OF THE BEARING.

        Install the bearing.

      2. Use an arbor press and IAE 3F10376 Drifts, remove/install 1 off to press the bearing in to the link bore.

        Apply a maximum load of 1101.5 lbf (500 kg).

    3. Remove the link and the bearing from the base.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-60-350-061 Fasten the Bearing to the Link

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Install the link on the guide of the base (1st calking).

      1. Initially stake the bearing.

      2. Use IAE 3F10376 Drifts, remove/install 1 off and an arbor press.

        Apply a gradually increasing load until the bearing retention staking lip is bent sufficiently. Load must not be more than 17624 lbf (8000 kg).

      1. Install the link on the guide of the base (2nd calking).

      1. Finally stake the bearing.

      2. Use IAE 3F10376 Drifts, remove/install and an arbor press.

        Apply a gradually increasing load until the retention lip of the bearing race contacts the bore chamfer of the link. Load must not be more than 17624 lbf (8000 kg).

      1. Turn the link and fasten the other side of the bearing.

      2. Do again Step to Step.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-60-350-062 Examine the Assembled Bearing

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Examine the bearing.

      2. Make sure that there is free movement of the bearing within the race.

        Make sure that there is no movement between the outer race and the link.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-60-350-063 Identify the Repair

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Make a mark VRS5386 adjacent to the part number.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501.
