General

This repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in TASK 72-32-23-200-000 (INSPECTION-000).

The component can be polished to remove very light frettage and/or stains, if the metal removed is not more than the limits given in the inspection.

Dress the component only for local removal of raised metal as far as possible. All raised metal must be removed.

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC. Only the primary Fig/item numbers are used. For the service bulletin alpha variants refer to the IPC.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK/SUBTASK numbers are in the SPM.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-23-220-069 Examine the Curvic Teeth

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Do a visual and dimensional inspection to find the damage.

      2. Use workshop inspection equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-23-230-075 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a penetarant crack test.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-03-230-501.

      3. Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-23-350-053 Remove the Damage

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. CAUTION

        TITANIUM COMPONENT - YOU MUST USE SILICON CARBIDE TYPE ABRASIVE WHEELS, STONES AND ABRASIVE PAPERS TO DRESS, BLEND AND POLISH THIS COMPONENT.
        TITANIUM COMPONENT - YOU MUST NOT USE ALUMINUM OXIDE ON THIS COMPONENT.
        TITANIUM COMPONENT - DO NOT USE FORCE WITH MECHANICAL CUTTERS OR THE MATERIAL WILL BECOME TOO HOT.
        TITANIUM COMPONENT - IF THE MATERIAL SHOWS A CHANGE IN COLOR, TO DARKER THAN A LIGHT STRAW COLOR, THE COMPONENT IS TO BE REJECTED.

        Dress the damaged area (refer to the limits given in step B.).

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-35-03-300-501.

      3. NOTE

        Each pair of radially adjacent flanks is one tooth divided in to two parts by the annular groove, ie four flanks in total.
      1. Limits.

        1. Dress any tooth if:

        2. Not more than 25 percent of the bedding surface area on one flank of a single tooth is damaged.

        3. When added together the total area of damage on one side of the teeth is not more than 15 percent of T.

          where T is the total area of the dressed teeth

          Example: T = X x W x n

          where X = bedding height

          W = face contact length

          n = number of teeth

      2. Damage in the roots of the teeth can be removed up to the annular groove depth but not beyond.

      1. Polish the area of repair.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-35-03-300-501.

      3. Polish the repaired area to give a surface finish the same as the adjacent material.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-23-110-082 Swab Etch the Repair

      1. Solvent clean.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-08-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-08-300-001.

      1. Swab etch the repair.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-08-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-08-300-002.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-23-230-057-001 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a penetrant crack test.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-04-230-501.
