Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-91-360-051 Remove the Damaged Abradable Seal

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Remove the damaged abradable seal by scraper with care to part.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-91-120-051 Clean the Surfaces which are to be Applied the Silicone Rubber Compound

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Apply masking tape to the areas where silicone rubber compound is not required.

      1. Apply dry abrasive blast to mold area by silicon carbide grit, air pressure 70 psig (483 kPa) at a distance of 6 in. (152 mm) minimum from air nozzle to part.

        1. Use dry blast system cabinet.

    3. Remove residual abrasive by vacuuming.

      1. Wipe blasted surface.

    4. NOTE

After cleaning the component must not be touched by hand and must be covered by craft paper, to prevent contamination.

Air dry for 10 minutes minimum.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-91-360-052 Apply Primer to the Surface after Cleaning

      1. NOTE

The primed surface must have a faintly visible pink coloration. If there is no visible coloration, the primer film may not be continuous. If the color is quite bright, streaky bright or chalky, the primer is too thick.

        NOTE

Keep the primer in a small container for single usage only. The remaining primer must not be used.

Immediately after air dry, apply a very thin coat (thickness 0.0001in. (0.003 mm)) of primer to mold surface using unsized cheese cloth.

      1. Cure the primed surface.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-36-06-360-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-91-360-053 Mix the Silicone Rubber Compound

      1. NOTE

Silicone rubber compound has a shelf life of six months from date of shipment.

        NOTE

Compound as received has been kept at temperature not higher than 90 deg F (32 deg C).

        NOTE

Shelf life extension is based on both viscosity and storage temperature.

        NOTE

Resin and catalyst in each kit are chemically matched. Do not mix with components from other kits.

Mix silicone rubber compound using the mixer with a drill press between 70 and 80 deg F (21 and 27 deg C) for 20 to 30 minutes.

    2. Degas from mixture with a vacuum of 25 to 50 mm Hg for 30 minutes minimum.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-91-360-054 Mold the Silicone Rubber Compound

      1. Clean the molding fixture.

    2. Attach the component to molding fixture.

    3. Put the degased silicone rubber compound into the air press type injector.

      1. Pour silicone rubber compound to the component with fixture using the air press type injector.

        1. Injection pressure:

        2. After silicone rubber coming out from the vent port 35 psig (241.5 kPa).

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-91-360-055 Cure the Silicone Rubber Compound

      1. Cure the compound.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-36-06-360-501.

    2. Remove the component from molding fixture.

      1. Cure the component.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-36-06-360-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-91-220-070 Examine the Repaired Area

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Visually examine the repaired area.

      2. Refer to TASK 72-32-91-200-000 (INSPECTION-000).

    3. Dimensional check the diameter of repaired area. If necessary, grind the diameter of repaired area.

      1. Hardness check the repaired area at four positions equally spaced on circumference.

        1. Use hardness tester (durometer).

        2. Hardness: ASTM D2240 (Durometer 'A') 52 - 65.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-91-220-071 Do a Bond Test the Repaired Area

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. NOTE

Bond test must be done after curing (bake) of rubber on the following conditions:

        NOTE

Inspection gas: Air or nitrogen gas.

        NOTE

Gas pressure: 200 psig (1380 kPa).

        NOTE

Inspection position: Vary the pattern as necessary to examine partial repaired area.

        NOTE

        Probe angle: Approximately 45 degrees.

Do a bond test to the repaired area.

        1. No signs of bulging or air leakage are permitted.
