This repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in TASK 72-41-13-200-000 (Inspection-000).

This TASK gives the procedure to repair the HP compressor rear shaft.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-220-202 Make sure the HP Compressor Rear Shaft can be Repaired

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. NOTE

        Dimensions given are necessary after machining.

        Visually and dimensionally examine HP compressor rear shaft.

      2. Make sure there is sufficient material on the No. 4 bearing front seal seat face for machining.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-324-061 Grind the HP Compressor Rear Shaft

    2. CAUTION

      DO NOT REMOVE MORE MATERIAL THAN IS NECESSARY.

      Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Install the fixture into the cylindrical grinding machine.

      2. Use a locally made grinding fixture.

      3. Use a cylindrical grinding machine and standard workshop equipment.

      1. Install the HP compressor rear shaft on to the fixture and set to turn correctly.

      2. Use a dial test indicator and standard workshop equipment.

      3. Make sure that datums A and B are set to turn correctly.

      1. Grind the HP compressor rear shaft.

      2. Use a cylindrical grinding machine.

      3. Machine only the minimum quantity of material to remove frettage.

      2. Use standard workshop equipment.

    3. Remove the HP compressor rear shaft from the cylindrical grinder.

      1. Chemically clean the part.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503.

      3. Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-110-088 Do a Swab Etch

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Swab etch the repaired area.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-39-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-39-300-001.

      3. Use chemical cleaning equipment.

      1. Visually examine the HP compressor rear shaft.

        1. Use X10 binoculars.

        2. Indications of defects are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-230-100 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a crack test on the repaired area.

        1. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

        2. Use penetrant crack test equipment.

        3. Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-220-203 Examine the HP Compressor Rear Shaft

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Do a visual inspection and measure the dimensions of the HP compressor rear shaft.

        1. Use workshop inspection equipment.

        2. Make sure the surface finish of the repaired surface is as given in the figures.

      1. Make a mark VRS6662 adjacent to the assembly number.
