This repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given and the part number is referenced in the relevant Chapter/Section/Subject, Inspection.

This repair is to machine the HP compressor rear rotating air seal flange face.

The practises and processes referred to in the procedures by the TASK/SUBTASK are in the SPM.

The HP compressor rear rotating air seal is manufactured from Waspalloy.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-14-220-095 Dimensionally Examine the HP Compressor Rear Rotating Air Seal

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

    3. Dimensionally examine the component to identify the damage dimensions.

    4. Make sure that the damage can be removed whilst maintaining the flange thickness required.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-14-110-064 Chemically Clean the HP Compressor Rear Rotating Air Seal

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

    3. Chemically clean the part.

      1. Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-14-220-096 Dimensionally Examine the HP Compressor Rear Rotating Air Seal

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

    3. Dimensionally examine the rear rotating air seal to find the dimensions of damage.

    4. Use workshop inspection equipment. Keep the dimensions for use with Step.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-14-320-001 Machine the HP Compressor Rear Rotating Air Seal by Turning

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

    3. Install the part into the lathe.

    4. Use standard workshop equipment.

    5. Machine to remove the damage from the flange front face.

      1. Machine to remove the damage at a maximum of 1.5x the depth of damage. Machine to remove all indication of damage.

        1. Machine the entire location face around the full circumference.

        2. The surface texture must be 0.00063 in. (0.000016 mm).

      2. Use a lathe/turning center with standard workshop equipment.

        1. Machine data:

        2. Speed, 131.233 surface feet per minute (40 metres per minute).

        3. Feed, 0.00394 in. per revolution (0.10 mm per revolution).

    6. Remove burrs and break sharp edges.

      1. Remove the burrs and sharp edges 0.012 in. +/- 0.008 in. (0.30 mm +/- 0.20 mm).

      2. Use standard workshop equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-14-230-066 Do a Crack Test

    2. Swab etch the repair area.

      1. Refer to SPM TASK 70-11-39-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-39-300-001.

      2. Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    3. Do a local crack test on the machined areas.

      1. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

        1. Use CoMat 06-022 FLUORESCENT PENETRANT (POST-EMULSIFIED ULTRA HIGH SENSITIVITY) with fluorescent penetrant crack test equipment.

        2. No cracks are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-14-220-097 Visually and Dimensionally Examine the HP Compressor Rear Rotating Air Seal

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

    3. Visually and dimensionally examine the rear rotating air seal.

    4. Make sure that the damage has been removed completely and the part has been machined within the limits given.

    3. Mark VRS6656 on the part adjacent to the part number.
