General

This TASK gives the procedure to remove the front bearing housing and spherical bearing assembly from the SBE 72-0406 VSV crankshaft assembly.

This TASK gives the procedure to remove the front bearing housing and spherical bearing assembly from the SBE 72-0426 VSV crankshaft assembly.

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC. Only the primary Fig/item numbers are used. For the service bulletin alpha variants refer to the IPC.

Apply the approved CoMat 10-058 PENETRATING OIL before the removal of threaded parts and parts with an interference fit. Let the parts soak before removal.

Refer to Figure for a view of the VSV crankshaft assembly.

NOTE

To identify the consumable materials refer to the PCI.

NOTE

Special tools are identified in the procedure by the tool primary number.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-040-055 Remove the Front Bearing Housing Assembly from the VSV Crankshaft

    1. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    2. Remove the retaining ring V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-636) that secures the front bearing housing assembly to the VSV crankshaft.

    3. Unstake the hole which secures the straight headless pin V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-638), refer to the view at A, Figure. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-42-06-400-501.

    4. NOTE

      Keep the VSV crankshaft and front bearing housing assembly together as a set.

      Remove the front bearing housing assembly and the straight headless pin from the VSV crankshaft.

    2. SUBTASK 72-41-34-040-056 Remove the Front Spherical Bearing Assembly from the VSV Crankshaft

    1. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

    2. Remove the retaining ring V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-623) that secures the spherical bearing assembly to the crankshaft.

      3. Install the IAE 1R19570 Extractor to the crankshaft, refer to Figure.

      1. NOTE

        Install the extractor in position over the VSV crankshaft from top side of the component.

        Locate the extractor collar over the outer bearing race.

      2. Attach the clamp over the bearing race and secure it to the extractor collar with the two nuts and washers. Tighten the two nuts.

      4. Attach the IAE 1R18686 Vane actuating adapter to the VSV crankshaft.

      1. Insert the stud, part of the adapter, through the holes in the VSV crankshaft and locate the adapter angle bracket on the pad of the crankshaft.

      2. Install the washers and nuts, part of the adapter, then tighten the nuts to secure the adapter to the crankshaft.

      5. Remove the spherical bearing.

      1. If necessary attach and secure the hydraulic supply to the Enerpac RCH-121 cylinder.

      2. CAUTION

        YOU MUST NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED HYDRAULIC OPERATING SUPPLY PRESSURE TO THE HYDRAULIC CYLINDER OR DAMAGE TO THE TOOLING AND COMPONENT COULD OCCUR.

        Operate the hydraulic pump to supply the cylinder with an operating supply pressure of 2,800 PSI (193 BAR) and slowly remove the spherical bearing from the crankshaft.

      3. Release the pump pressure and if necessary disconnect the supply from the Enerpac hydraulic cylinder. If necessary remove the Enerpac RCH-121 cylinder from the extractor.

      4. Remove the nuts, washers and the adapter from the VSV crankshaft.

      5. Remove the extractor from the VSV crankshaft and store the tooling in the special wooden storage box provided.

      6. Remove the spherical bearing from the crankshaft.
