This repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in 72-41-34 Inspection.

This repair describes the replacement of shoulder pins in the HP compressor actuating mechanism levers by hot squeeze riveting.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK numbers are in the SPM.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-350-073 Remove the Damaged Pin

      1. CAUTION

        DO NOT DAMAGE THE HOLE IN THE LEVER.

        Remove the damaged pin.

      2. Use a hand grinder, or a drilling machine with a 0.18in. (4.5 mm) diameter drill, to remove the head of the pin.

        Remove the pin with a drift.

      1. Clean the pin location hole in the lever.

      2. Use hand tools to remove burrs, but keep sharp edge to the hole.

    2. Do a visual inspection of the pin location in the lever.

      1. Do a penetrant crack test to the lever.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

        Cracks are not permitted.

      1. CAUTION

        THE MACHINE SETTINGS MUST BE MADE BY TRIAL USING SUITABLE TEST PIECES. USE A LOW VOLTAGE SETTING AND THE MINIMUM AMOUNT OF HEAT REQUIRED TO MAKE THE RIVET FORGE OVER. IF TOO MUCH HEAT IS USED THE MATERIAL WILL CRACK AND OXIDISE.
        DO NOT OVERHEAT THE MATERIAL.

        Assemble the parts.

      2. Make sure the location pin is on the correct side of the lever and the location pin is at 90 degrees to the lever.

        Refer to Figure.

      1. Hot squeeze rivet.

      2. Fit the electrodes to the resistance welding machine.
