This Repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in 72-41-34 Inspection.

This Repair has been raised to replace the pins on the VIGV lever assembly and stage 3 lever assembly.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK number are in the SPM.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-350-077 Remove the Damaged Pin

      CAUTION

      DO NOT CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE HOLE IN THE LEVER.
      1. Remove the damaged pin.

      2. Use a hand grinder or use a drilling machine and a 0.177 in. (4.5 mm) diameter drill to remove the head of the pin.

        Remove the pin by use of a drift.

      1. Clean the pin location hole in the lever.

      2. Remove the burrs but keep a sharp edge at the hole.

        Use hand tools.

    2. Visually examine the pin location hole in the lever.

      1. Do a penetrant crack test.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

        Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-230-072-002 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a penetrant crack test.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-03-230-501.

        Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-110-058 Chemically Clean the Lever and the New Shoulder Pin

      1. Remove the grease from the lever and the new pin.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503 SUBTASK 70-11-01-300-002.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-390-053 Hot Squeeze Rivet the Shoulder Pin to the Lever

      CAUTION

      DO NOT LET THE MATERIAL BECOME TOO HOT.

      NOTE

      Make sure of the settings of the welding machine by first using applicable test pieces. Use a low voltage setting and the minimum quantity of heat necessary to make the rivet forge over. If too much heat is used the material will crack and oxidize.
    2. Refer to Figure and Figure

      1. Assemble the lever and the pin.

      2. Make sure the pin is on the correct side of the lever and that the pin is at 90 degrees to the lever.

      1. Hot squeeze rivet the pin to the lever.

      2. Install IAE 3R18654 Top electrode 1 off and IAE 3R18656 Bottom electrode 1 off in the resistance welding machine.

        Hot squeeze rivet the pin to the lever.

        Refer to the SPM TASK 70-39-02-390-501.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

        Cracks are not permitted.
