This repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in 72-41-34, Inspection.

The HP compressor actuating ring/unison ring, VIGV upper and lower assemblies, repaired to this procedure must be as near as possible to its initial shape and surface condition.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK/SUBTASK number are in the SPM.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-110-091 Chemically Clean

      1. Chemically Clean.

      2. Refer to TASK 72-41-34-100-000 (CLEANING-000).

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-230-083 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a penetrant crack test.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

        Use penetrant crack test equipment.

        Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-350-082 Remove the Damage

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - YOU MUST USE SILICON CARBIDE TYPE ABRASIVE WHEELS, STONES AND PAPERS TO DRESS, BLEND AND POLISH THIS COMPONENT.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - DO NOT USE FORCE WITH MECHANICAL CUTTERS OR THE MATERIAL WILL BECOME TOO HOT.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - MAXIMUM SPEED FOR MECHANICAL TOOLS MUST NOT BE MORE THAN 1000 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU REMOVE MATERIAL, BLEND AND POLISH, TO MAKE SMOOTH THAT NO SPARKS ARE PRODUCED.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - IF THE MATERIAL SHOWS A CHANGE IN COLOR, TO DARKER THAN A LIGHT STRAW COLOR, THE COMPONENT IS TO BE REJECTED.
    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Remove area(s) of damage as necessary.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-35-03-300-501.

        The maximum depth to remove the damage must not be more than 0.005 in. (0.13 mm).

        The diameter of the repaired area must be 50 times the depth.

        Use standard workshop equipment.

        Make sure the damage marks are fully removed.

      1. Blend area(s) of repair.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-35-03-300-501.

        Make sure the damage marks are completely removed and the area is made smooth to the adjacent material.

        Use standard workshop equipment.

      1. Polish the area(s) of repair.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-35-03-300-501.

        Polish the repaired area(s) to remove scratches and to give a surface finish the same as the adjacent material.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-220-213 Examine the Repair

    2. Refer to: Figure.

      1. Do a visual/dimensional inspection.

      2. Make sure the surface finish is the same as the adjacent material.

        Make sure the maximum depth of repair is 0.005 in. (0.13 mm).

        Use workshop inspection equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-110-090 Do a Swab Etch

      1. Chemically clean.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-08-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-08-300-001.

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

      1. Swab etch the repair area(s).

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-08-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-08-300-002.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-230-084 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a local penetrant crack test on the repaired area(s).

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

        Use penetrant crack test equipment.

        Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-350-179 Identify the Repair

      1. Vibro-engrave VRS6158 on the part adjacent to the part number.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501, SUBTASK 70-09-00-400-001.

        Use vibro engraving equipment.
