Material of component

The HP Compressor Actuating Ring Connector (Bridge Piece) is manufactured from Titanium alloy.

General

This repair must only be done when the instruction is given in TASK 72-41-34 (INSPECTION/CHECK).

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK/SUBTASK numbers are in the SPM.

Use TASK 72-41-31-300-026 to replace damaged bushes.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-110-097 Chemically Clean

      1. Chemically clean.

      2. Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-230-151 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a local permanent crack test on the area(s) to be repaired.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

        Use 06-063 fluorescent penetrant with penetrant crack test equipment.

        If cracked - Reject.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-350-056 Remove the Damaged Areas

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENTS - YOU MUST USE SILICON CARBIDE TYPE ABRASIVE WHEELS, STONES AND PAPERS TO DRESS, BLEND AND POLISH THIS COMPONENT.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENTS - DO NOT USE FORCE WITH MECHANICAL CUTTERS OR THE MATERIAL WILL BECOME TOO HOT.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENTS - MAXIUM SPEED FOR MECHANICAL TOOLS MUST NOT EXCEED 1000 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENTS - YOU MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU REMOVE THE MATERIAL, BLEND AND POLISH, TO MAKE SMOOTH, THAT NO SPARKS ARE PRODUCED.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENTS - IF THE MATERIAL SHOWS A CHANGE IN COLOR, TO A DARKER THAN LIGHT STRAW COLOR, THE COMPONENT IS TO BE REJECTED.
    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Remove small area(s) of damage as necessary.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-35-03-300-501.

        The maximum depth to remove the damage must not be more than 0.005 in. (0.13 mm).

        The maxium depth to remove the damage from the weld beads (location 7 only) is 0.025 in. (0.64 mm).

        The diameter of the removed area is to be 50 times the depth.

        Damage to the weld bead is only to be dressed within the weld bead.

        Use standard workshop equipment.

      1. Blend the area of repair.

      1. Polish the area of repair.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-35-03-300-501.

        Use standard workshop equipment.

        Polish to remove dressing marks and to give a surface finish the same as the adjacent material.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-220-544 Do a Swab Etch

      1. Chemically clean.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-08-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-08-300-001.

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

      1. Swab etch the repair area(s).

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-08-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-08-300-002.

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-220-186 Examine the Repair

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Make a visual and dimensional inspection.

      2. Use workshop inspection equipment.

        Make sure the maximum depth of the repair is not more than 0.005 in. (0.13 mm).

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-34-230-081 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a penetrant crack test.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

        If cracked - Reject.
