Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-350-157 Remove the Damaged Helicoil Insert

    1. Refer to: Figure

      2. Put the extracting tool into the insert.

      1. Put the extracting tool into the insert at approximately a quarter of a coil from the end of the insert.

      3. Hit the head of the tool lightly to dig blade into top of coil of the insert.

      1. Use a hammer.

      4. Bearing down hard on hand of tool, turn it slowly counterclockwise.

      1. Maintain hard pressure on handle as insert backs out.

    2. SUBTASK 72-50-53-350-158 Install the New Helicoil Insert

    1. Refer to: Figure

    2. Put the new helicoil insert on the tip of the inserting tool.

    3. Put the tool with the insert above the threaded hole.

      4. Install the helicoil insert into hole. Turn the handle clockwise.

      1. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-35-08-300-501.

        Install the helicoil 1 to 1.5 pitch below the surface.

      5. Break insert tang off at notch.

      1. Use tang break-off tool.

        Remove broken tang.

    3. SUBTASK 72-50-53-220-210 Do an Inspection of the Helicoil Insert

      1. Examine the helicoil insert.

      1. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-35-08-300-501.
