Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-21-350-060 Remove the Insert

    1. Refer to Figure.

      2. Apply the extracting tool into the insert.

      1. Drive the extracting tool into the insert at approximately a quarter of a coil from the end of the insert.

      3. Arrange the extracting tool into the insert.

      1. Hit the head of the tool lightly to dig the blade into the top of the coil of the insert.

        Use a hammer.

      4. Complete the removal of the insert.

      1. Bearing down hard on the handle of the tool.

        Turn the tool slowly counterclockwise.

        Maintain a hard pressure on the handle when the insert backs out.

    2. SUBTASK 72-60-21-330-056 Restore the Damaged Anodic Treatment

      1. Check the surface.

      1. Do the touch-up process if the anodic treatment has been damaged by insert removal.

        Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-02-300-503.

    3. SUBTASK 72-60-21-350-061 Install the New Insert

    1. Refer to Figure.

      2. Put the insert on the tool.

      1. Put the new helicoil insert on the tip of the inserting tool.

      3. Put the tool with the insert.

      1. Put the tool with the new helicoil insert into the threaded hole.

      4. Install the insert into the hole.

      1. Install the new helicoil insert into the hole.

        Turn the handle clockwise.

        Install the helicoil 1 to 1.5 pitch below surface.

      5. Break the tangs.

      1. Break the insert tang off at notch.

        Use a tang break-off tool.

        Remove broken tangs from blind holes with a magnetized rod.

    4. SUBTASK 72-60-21-330-057 Restore the Damaged Anodic Treatment

      1. Check the surface.

      1. Do the touch-up process if the anodic treatment has been damaged by insert installation.

        Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-02-300-503.

    5. SUBTASK 72-60-21-230-056 Crack Test the Repaired Area

      1. Do a crack test on the repaired area.

      1. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

    6. SUBTASK 72-60-21-220-107 Inspect the Insert

      1. Do an inspection of the new helicoil insert.

      1. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-35-08-300-501.
