Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-21-320-136 Machine the Oil Nozzle Bore in the Main Gearbox Casing

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Machine the starter housing bore.

        1. The diameter must be between 0.70866 in. to 0.70925 in. (18.000 mm to 18.015 mm) after the removal of the damage.

        2. Deleted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-21-220-167 Examine the Gearbox Casing

      1. Inspect the casing for cracks in the area of the bore.

      2. Use a magnifying glass.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-21-330-121 Apply the Chromate Conversion Coating

      1. Apply the chromate conversion coating to the machined surfaces.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-02-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-21-350-161Install the Bushing

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. WARNING

DO NOT TOUCH THE HOT PARTS WITHOUT PROTECTIVE GLOVES. HOT PARTS CAN CAUSE REDDENING AND BLISTERING OF THE SKIN IF THE HANDS ARE NOT PROTECTED. IMMERSE THE CONTACTED AREA IN COLD WATER FOR 10 MINUTES IF THE SKIN IS BURNED. IMMEDIATELY GET MEDICAL ATTENTION IF PAIN OR BLISTERING PERSIST.

Increase the temperature of the casing and/or decrease the bushing.

      2. Use an oven and/or a freezer. Do not increase the temperature of the casing above 284 deg. F (104 deg. C). Do not decrease the temperature of the bushing below -58 deg. F (-50 deg. C).

        NOTE

The difference in temperature between the parts must be 216 deg. F (120 deg. C).
      1. Remove the housing from the oven and/or the bushing from the freezer.

      2. Use protective gloves.

      1. CAUTION

INSTALL BUSHING IN MACHINED BORE IMMEDIATELY AFTER REMOVAL FROM FREEZER, OTHERWISE BUSHING CANNOT BE CORRECTLY INSTALLED.

Install the bushing into the machined bore.

      2. Use, if necessary, an arbor press. Give sufficient back-up support at bushing bore area, to prevent housing distortion when you install the bushing.

    3. Let the parts get the ambient temperature.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-21-320-137 Machine the Inner Diameter of the Bushing

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Machine the inner diameter of the bushing.

        1. The dimension must be between 0.5295 in. to 0.5965 in. (15.050 mm to 15.150 mm). Chamfer where necessary.

        2. Deleted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-21-330-122 Apply the Chromate Conversion Coating

      1. Apply the chromate conversion coating to the machined surfaces of the bushing.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-02-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-21-350-162 Identify the Repair

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Make a mark VRS5296 adjacent to the part number.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501, SUBTASK 70-09-400-001.
