Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-350-085 Remove the Inserts

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Remove the 3 inserts from the housing.

      2. Refer to Repair VRS5328, TASK 72-60-22-300-020.

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Machine the mounting face.

      2. The preplating dimension must be 1.0661 to 1.0728 in. (27.080 to 27.250 mm) in relation to surface F, after the removal of the damage.

      3. Remove all damage and wear. Keep the removal of material to the minimum necessary to remove the damage.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-230-058 Examine the housing

      1. Do the fluorescent penetrant inspection for cracks.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

      3. No cracks are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-330-071 Nickel Plate the Mounting Face of the Starter Drive Housing

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Mask the areas of the housing not to be plated.

      1. Do the nickel plating.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-08-300-503.

      3. Plate to a sufficient thickness to permit the machining to the last dimension. The plating out of the mounting face is permitted, but must be removed.

    3. Remove the mask.

      1. Clean and dry the housing.

      2. Flush with cold water. Flush with hot water. Dry with air blast.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-370-066 De-embrittle the Housing

      1. Put the housing into an oven at 241 to 260 deg F (116 to 127 deg C) for 60 to 90 minutes.

      2. Do this process as soon as possible, in less than 4 hours, after the plating.

      1. Do the visual inspection of the plating for finish, cracks and adhesion.

      2. Plating must have a constant color. No circumferential cracks are permitted.

      3. Rough and blistered areas are not permitted.

      1. Machine the mounting face.

      2. The dimension must be 1.061 to 1.065 in. (26.950 to 27.050 mm) in relation to surface F. Chamfer where necessary.

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Do the visual inspection of the plated area, for cracks and adhesion.

      2. Use a 4x magnifying glass.

      3. The natural network crack, emphasized by grinding, is permitted.

      1. Measure the thickness of the plating.

      2. Do not accept a thickness of less than 0.0006 in. (0.015 mm), after the last machining.

      1. Install the new insert.

      2. Refer to Repair, VRS5328, TASK 72-60-22-300-020.

      1. Vibro-engrave VRS5032 adjacent to the part number.

      2. Remove the metal lifted by marking the number.
