This repair can be done to the clamping ring attached to the gearbox breather duct. It can be done during engine overhaul.

Price and availability - none.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedures by the TASK numbers are in the Standard Practices Manual (SPM).

A backing-block must be locally manufactured from a square piece of stainless steel block. One face of the backing-block must be smooth and flat and must have no burrs.

If the clamping ring has been repaired before, do not do this repair.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-61-49-350-051 Repair the Clamping Ring

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. CAUTION

        MAKE SURE THAT THERE ARE NO BURRS OR SHARP EDGES ON THE BACKING BLOCK. MAKE SURE THAT THERE ARE NO UNWANTED PARTICLES, DIRT OR GRIT ON THE BACKING-BLOCK OR ON THE CLAMPING RING. THESE COULD CAUSE SCRATCHES OR CRACKS DURING THE REPAIR.

        Repair the clamping ring.

      2. Refer to Figure and change the shape of the clamping ring to the correct shape.

      3. Use the backing block. Put the face of the backing-block against the clamping ring. Make sure that this face of the backing-block is smooth and flat and has no burrs.

      4. Use the Nylon mallet.

      5. Use no more force than is necessary to change the shape of the clamping ring. If the clamping ring must be moved through more than 5 degrees during the repair, discard the clamping ring.

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Examine the straight parts of the clamping ring.

      2. Refer to Figure and make sure that these parts are straight.

      3. Use the Straight edge.

      4. The ring must be 90 degrees to the axis of the gearbox breather duct all around the circumference of the duct.

      1. Do a dye penetrant test on the clamping ring.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-61-49-350-052 Put the Repair Scheme Number on the Clamping Ring

      1. Mark the repair scheme number VRS2998 on the clamping ring adjacent to the repair area.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501 and use the electro-etch method.
